Hi Folks,

I thought I would wade in on this issue. I am not a true diesel guy, however I know a little about them. If the engine has a precombustion chamber the engine will be a little louder (clatter) than if the engine does not have a precombustion chamber. This I believe is true of most diesel engines regardless of the mfg. and maybe a diesel guy can confirm. I agree with the previous post that it would not hurt to have a diesel tech listen to the engine to confirm the rattle.

Hey all- I thought it was the other way around, that swirl chambers IDI (indirect injection) was more quiet than DI (direct injection) I know that if the injection pump timing is advanced to far it will clatter more, but with this advanced timing, the temperature should be running higher than normal. Just my 2cents

my 3 cyl Kukje rattes like that when fresh started and idling, it also seems to quiet down some under load. Haven't tried the split brakes for steering.

Autozone can also cross reference filters for you.
One thing I've been told, the OEM hydraulic filter has a larger bypass valve, so if using other filters you'll need to change them more often than the book says to.

Not to be putting anyone's trucks down, but Dodge diesels (cummins) have always sounded louder to me than Fords as well, so it may just be engine design.
