We're getting ready to start a new project and need help in picking the right switch for the project. We need an electrical SPST pilot duty switch that can be mounted to the operating platform and easily be operated with your foot. It can be either momentary with normally open contacts, or tap once to lock the contacts closed and tap it again to lock the contacts open type switch. Initially an old style headlight dimmer switch that was used on most older cars and was mounted to the floorboard came to mind but Junkman said they were a poor choice when it came to moisture problems.

Our next thought was a floorboard style starter switch as used in open military vehicles like maybe a Jeep but we have been unable to find any. If you have any ideas or suggestions please jump right in, all suggestions are welcome.

I'm afraid a sewing machine switch is way to big, plus it would get crusty with mud real quick.

The linemaster in the link is light duty with stamped top and case. You want the Linemaster Clipper, cast construction.

We use them for transmit switches in radio dispatch offices with hundreds of cycles per day.

The compact model soon reaches a point where it comes apart. The clipper hangs in there even to the point that the operator's shoe wears off the cast-in ridges.

Mike,

Next time you are in town swing by Philcap Electronics (or give 'em a call) and see if they have anything. They are on Market Street right by Route 8 North and have all kinds of stuff electronic. I just picked up a NEMA waterproof box and switches for my ROPS lights there last week.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. After a bit of re-consideration we opted for a thumb button instead of a foot switch. Decided it would be better not to expose a switch to all the mud that collects on a platform. This will be a part of our next addition, shown is the modified joystick faceplate.
