Here's something for you to look through:

Tractors (Less than $20,000) for Sale | Used Tractors by Manufacturer | Fastline.com

988 tractors under $20K (sorry, that's as low as the search options go) located in NY, NJ and PA. These are dealer listings, and you would have to figure out which ones are in OK condition and which are worn out or have problems.

You can use something like SearchTempest - The EASY way to search Craigslist to do power searches on Craig's list, but 90% of the so-called "tractors" you find are riding lawnmowers, not real tractors.

Good luck with the auctions.

Thank you guys for the replies. Well then what do you guys suggest then in terms of looking at some tractors? Should I consider HP at more than 25 or should I consider a higher amount?

If you guys have some examples of some tractors from John deere or Kubota that would meet my needs please let me know.

Here are some new ones I have seen:

1. Kubota L3300
(If I get something like this with a backhoe I believe I have to remove the backhoe before using any pto attachments right?)

2. Tractor Kubota 2000

3. http://www.tractorhouse.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=6480035&

Thank you again.

Any of those machines in your price range?

As far as removing the backhoe to operate PTO driven implements...yes, you would have to remove it.

The tractors themselves are pretty good ones for what you are doing. New enough that they should be reliable if purchased in decent shape. As others have said, you can also find 50-60 year old gas tractors (basically all the modern ones are diesels), but they commonly need regular tinkering to keep them running. (Come to think of it, when I hit 50, I needed some tinkering myself, but we won't go into that!). Many, including me, love the old tractors, but for what you're doing, I think something a bit newer, like you've pinpointed here, would be more reliable. Here are just one guy's opinions regarding these three:

The Kubota L3300 might go for the quoted price for the tractor + loader alone. But the ad says it also has a very expensive backhoe, which probably cost $7k by itself when new. Something a bit odd there. It might be legit... these are hard times and someone really may have to unload it, but be sure to look it over carefully and operate it before doing anything.

The Kubota L4310 is quite a bit larger tractor that should sell for quite a bit more than that if it's in decent condition. I'd be wary that there's something wrong with it or it's worn out.

The John Deere 3203 might be OK. Here's a link to an ad for the same model for sale in Kansas at about the same price:
2008 John Deere 3203 Tractors | O'MALLEY EQUIPMENT CO INC INDEPENDENCE, KS #5821
Same caution as for the first Kubota about checking it out before showing your money.

I know the Kubota models more than the Deere models, so with Kub, I'd recommend something in the "standard" L series, 25 to 35 hp. Kubota makes these "standard" models and a larger "grand" L line, which would mostly be out of your price range unless well used (like that L4310, I suspect). Unfortunately, the model numbers overlap confusingly, so you can't go just by the numbering.

Grandad4 has found a same model 3203 with same loader with only 125 hours on it for about the same money. Looks to be a good tractor for starters, there will be plenty of times having a fel will be handy. A little light to plow with imo.

hrcarvers shows some tractors that are sized better for the field work and in that light would be more capable for getting the ground prepared initially.

nyfarm777, really you need a good plan to decide what equipment will work the best for you. What do you intend to plant and grow? What are the needs for tillage? What would be the heaviest things the loader would need to pickup? How much time do you have to do the work that needs to be done?

More information about the lay of the land would also be helpful, most of us are guessing here. Roy brought up a very important point too, it is almost impossible to make a profit with this type venture. Without a vast amount of experience and time which most of us including you don't seem to have. Farming for a profit is expensive hard and risky work, most of us are hobbyist and don't expect to make a profit. You need to be aware of this fact as this is mostly spending money not making money.

Thank you for your replies. Well I do have a job and i will be doing this on the side as supplementary income and as a hobby. I do have experience in small scale farming but never for a profit and this will be my first purchase of a tractor. I am doing this with my family and we are not only going to be growing some crops but also raising some livestock on range which is what i will be leaning towards to more and the vegetable and salad crops on the side. I would think of it to be somewhat like what Eliott Coleman does in Maine in doing small scale farming.

My Property consists of half wooded and half pasture the whole property is flat. I will be using the tractor foremost for cleaning and prepping up the land. It has not been farmed in years. This involves passing through with a brush hog, tilling/plowing where I will be growing some vegetables which would be 5-10 acres at most as well as making some irrigation ditches for water which is used allot around here by the other farmers and in maintaining pasture for livestock on range. I would be using the tractor to haul and move compost, branches and farm garbage. I would also need to be able to pass through small areas in the woods if needed.

I hope that this gives much more understanding to what I will be doing and what types of jobs the tractor will be doing.
I would be interested in a larger tractor but since this is my first tractor purchase I would think I will need to start small and then expand
If needed. Like someone here said, larger tractors require more maintenance and expertise.

Thank you very much.

I am posting this to bump this thread up! I would appreciate the suggestions and assistance on my last post, in regards to what I will be using a tractor for in my property. I dont know if to consider something 20HP or above 25HP or if I should be okay with a tractor that is 24HP-30HP.

Thank you for your time.

While I am not familiar with E. Coleman my thought is that 10 acres of vegetables is a large undertaking, seems to me that would be a fulltime job in the growing season. To get worthwhile yields in a garden requires alot of work, for a ten acre garden you will need some help. Tiny tractors just won't get much work done in the time frame you will have.

I don't see where buying a larger machine makes it more complicated to maintain, atleast not of any significance. I posted pics on page 1 of this thread and still feel something similar would work for you.

If you don't have some ground clearance how do you intend to cultivate between the rows? What crops are you intent on growing?
