Rotary Cutter need help selecting a shredder

I do not have any experience with JD shredders, they do not seem to be popular around here even though everybody has their farming equipment. My 2815 has been excellent, extremely rugged, trouble free with excellent cut quality. Paint quality is excellent.

I am not sure how important it is to get close to objects with a big shredder. Personally, I try to keep a distance as I know that otherwise I will hit something sooner or later and cause damage to it or the shredder.I think its best not to try and detail with a batwing. Just my thoughts.

Those 15’ shredder / flail don’t flex like a Batwing Cutter do they ?

No, the 15 foot cut flail shredders do not fold like a batwing shredder.

The model 1700 15 foot cut flail shredder does not have the end transport option.

The model 1700 20 foot cut flail shredder has the end towing option with lighting and reflectors for road transport

Both the fifteen foot cut and twenty foot cutting width model 1700 flail shredders can be equipped with either the towing hitch option or the three point hitch option for field work

The end towing option allows the user to pass through gates more easily and also allow for quicker road travel with lights and reflectors as the end towing option makes them easier to move from place to place by road as the flail shredders are smaller in total width than the tractor itself or the road width.

Using the three point hitch mounting system option allows for quicker turning and backing while mowing or shredding versus having the tow hitch for the shredding field work.

The constant velocity universal joint allows the user to make tighter turns when the towing hitch method is used for the shredder.

The flail shredders also have the added safety feature where there are hinged doors/shutters along the entire width/front of the flail shredder to stop and or reduce the chance of an object or rock being ejected out the front of the flail shredder.

This is all explained in great detail in the literature they have on the internet.

They have recently added the model 5710 6 foot flail shredder with 540 RPM drive to their line of flail shredders for mowing. The 5710 model can be equipped with a ratchet jack to adjust the
cutting height or a hydraulic cylinder. This flail mower must be towed and it is equipped with a constant
velocity universal joint.

INO offers a two or three section flail shredder and they can flex up to 15 degrees from horizontal.


Here are two well done videos showing how tall growth is shredded by the INO flail mower down to 2 inch height and how corn stubble is shredded using the triplex flail shredder with the spiral mounted cast and machined cup flail knives.
I have also uploaded an image of a triplex 800 fully retracted and traveling on the highway in Europe.

If I had a you tube video for the Mathews flail crop shredders I would post that too.

The Fendt tractor towing the triplex mower in the sunflower crop was not stopped by the sunflower crops high population stand.

definitely an advantage with 20 vs 15 - my experience is you will notice a significant difference in undulation and cutting annoyances with having to lift it up and down around things, if this is relatively flat, smooth ( not many ditches ) a 5020 should be fine with that HP depending on how low u cut and how think things are that you are cutting.

We run two rhino batwings - 15' and if you are running in TALL 2 yr old to 3 y/o growth CRP it will put a 105 PTO hp tractor on its knees if you are cutting 6 inches or less, we run around 12 inches so any small saplings dont leave short stobs to puncture tires, the taller stems left will push over as you drive over them.

What ever you do DONT buy one of the batwings used that has the combo distribution gearbox in front that has the center blade coming off it while running the pto drive to the tractor and two wings, if you lose that gearbox you are screwed, NO ONE makes those gearboxes anymore you cannot find a replacement other than salvage. All new mowers use a straight through distribution gearbox that runs to a separate gearbox stubbed behind it for the center blade.

I would NEVER buy a flail for mowing CRP, that would be a nightmare in that tall stuff and so much harder to run/HP wise.

We only run around 2.0 to 3.0 mph tops, we take care of around 350acres of CRP with those two mowers. We would like a 20 footer but until we lose one of ours we will be sticking with them.

Land Pride, Rhino, Bush hog, Tiger, all make them, i cant remember who makes the lime green ones but i see them on the Deere hwy dept mowers on occasion. There are different quality versions of course so make sure you check them out for longevity and wear on the hinges and rear lift mechanism as it takes a beating on tough ground, the faster you go the more you will see the results of the beating they take.

IF you are just mowing pasture you will be able to go much faster - a 20 footer equates to 10 more feet on a down/back run or - less turning at the ends is harder on your equipment as well as costs you time, best thing is to mow in circles/squares sections, not that you already didnt know that but that 20footer will reduce your cutting time A LOT not to mention fuel so if you have wide open space to mow, it will pay for itself for sure.

Lots of info here. I’ll be buying new once I decide & can afford.
I’m just not into flail shredders for my monthly clipping thick grass fields.
I’m currently cutting every 3-4wks with my JD MX10 3pt Lift Type Cutter at 4-5” height.
It does a great job running it a fuzz faster in E-PTO : but it just takes too much time with a 10’ Swath lol

if you are just cutting grass fields id say a 15 would be great for you and your application, medium duty would be fine as well. Id even consider a used one if you can find one in descent shape. Save a lil money or you could trade something else that you dont need as well if you get it from a dealer and dont want to deal with selling it yourself.

I have heard good things about the Land Pride mowers as well as the Schulte not sure on pricing compared to the Bhogs/Deere and of course considering dealers that might be what you need to do. With all your Deere stuff id think they should be kind to you ;-) and want to keep your business. not to get off track how have your 6.7 fords been treating you ?

I like the New JD R15 but it just don’t have the BTS as the Trusted BH 2815.

I absolutely LOVE both my 6.7L F350’s

My 5101E came from Rolla, MO. Is that close to you ?
