Plumber came, confirmed frozen pipe, said nothing to do except try to thaw it out unless we want to start tearing the house apart. On my way out to find space heater.

Got wood stove cranking and heat set at 80, we'll see what happens

On the far side if the pipe is frozen hook up a welder to the pipe. It's hard on the welder and may heat things up too fast. Never seen it done but have head of it.

Not too far out - my welder actually addresses this in the instructions, you put amp on lowest setting and I think I could have it hooked up for up to 60 minutes straight. Probably longer if it was cold outside and helping cool the transformer.

Seems one would want to have a good way of monitoring the heat that will build up in the pipe, so as not to boil water in one location and also not to melt the solder at all the joints in the heat run. That would not be fun.

I have seen this welding trick work with underground pipes. I would think the plumber of Hazmat's might know how to do that.

I don't have zone valves in my three heat runs, but have pumps instead. I leave the pumps run a lot to be sure the water doesn't sit too long when it is real cold outside. If I ever have to leave the house, I plug a light into the pump that services the bedroom area and turn the heat down on that thermostat to about 55 degrees, and leave the doors open to the living room. Normal heating of the living room area will keep the bedroom area warmer than 55 degrees. If there is a failure, and that bedroom thermostat calls for heat and that pump kicks on, the light also comes on which is in the living room window. The neighbor knows that if that light is on, there is no heat in the house and calls the heating co. for me. Only needed it once, but sure glad it was in effect when that time came.

mine "incident" was my own fault .... since I had replaced the boiler and done some work .... but NOT replaced all the antifreeze in the system ...
If I had the proper mixture in the lines, it would not have been able to freeze.
Penny wise ... pound foolish .... as the old saying goes.

The reason plumbers don't do the welder trick in doors is because if it's cold enough to freeze the pipes, it's probably too cold to keep the firemen happy. Doesn't happen often, but once is more than enough if it's your home.

My buddy at work used to weld for a machine shop, they'd get called out to unfreeze pipes at the local prison. Says it works great on exposed pipes, but he didn't want to try it on my house.

So, are you all unfrozen again?

Nope, & I burned my hand on my heat gun trying to warm up the pipes. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Spent Sunday afternoon in the ER. Typing is a bit tough now.

I was not paying attention while reaching behind myself to pick it up. I grabbed the metal barrel instead of the plastic handle.
