Need help with finding specialty hardware.

A buddy is doing a restoration on an old John Deere wagon and is looking for some chain binders. As he described them, "Every old grain truck I ever saw had this setup that pulled the bed sides tight so they didn't flap around".
The binders are made out of thin round stock and kind of shaped like a cam. One end of the binder is secured on one length of chain and the binder passes through the link of another chain and the binder is folded back over itself and pulls the chains tight then the binder is secured with a ring. Same principle as a lever binder or mini binder but simpler.

Anyone know what these are called and where to get these simple binders/fasteners. They would be easy to fabricate but he is wanting to go the easier route if possible.

Thanks for the reply but not exactly what he is looking for. This is more like a heavy wire that is shaped like an exaggerated "L" ( that is a really bad explanation but about as good as I can remember what he is referring to) that is passed though a link and cammed over to tighten the chain. The longer end of the "L" is then held in place by a ring or link. Very simple/cheap design.

My brother in law used something like you a describing to hold up the fence at a gap where ther wasn,t a gate it was made out of a piece of wood.

I know where there may be one on a set of old grain sides. I'll stop and get a picture in a couple of days if I don't forget.

The chain that was used with that type binder was called double loop.

Found this in McMaster Carr. Not exactly what I think you are wanting. Just maybe close. Need to add the ring. I recall them as being smaller and lighter in weight and just heavy rod bent to the right shape.

Without seeing it, it sounds like the tire chain tightener binder deals. tirechains.com maybe?

Showing my age here a bit :ashamed: but i know exactly what you're looking for, though i'm not sure of a supplier.
I'd suggest checking with dealers for grain boxes for farm trucks, they may have some of the old bed chains and tensioners laying around.

Although there may be different styles that vary some, this is what I've always seen. This one is made from steel rod about 1/4" in diameter and if there was a ring to secure this one it was buried down in the dirt somewhere. For some reason it seems like that once the binder broke over center nothing was needed to keep it in place - that is if the binder geometry was correct BUT, I could be way off base on that.

I you have a torch get some rod and bend them your self, most likely one can cold bend them as well,

OK I was trying to remember how the ones we had were,

there was loop that the chain was attached to, that then had a 180 degree bend or halve loop to hook the opposite chain to, but the way I remember it was about 8 inches long but on the tail there was a bend of 90 degrees with a small u shape that would catch on to the chain it was attached to, seems like we had one with the ring method as well,

That is the one I remember. Have one drawn out on paper that I was going to post, but you have it (used to have a ring on the chain that would hold the tip from catching on something and flipping open). Fairly easy to bend some 1/4" steel rod.

We used them on wood sided grain wagons to keep the sides from bowing out when oats or ear corn were loaded, or at the end where the tailgate was installed. When shoveling out the wagon, they were opened so the chains were not in the way.

This one is relatively new in that it is on steel grain sides from a truck in the early 1980s.
