Grumble. This tractor has leaked like a sieve since day one. It is rebuilt, so lots of things need tightening.

I have been loosing oil more and more, and know I have a leak in the treddle area as well as the engine compartment. The engine compartment has become worse, so I thought I would tackle it today. I was quite sure it was a loose hose connected to the tank. I was completely wrong.

I found one leak. It was the lower Hex Nut on the side of the pump. It is metric, took me a moment to fix (picture 1 - 4455). I was really surprised this bad boy was loose. Anyone know what it does or why it got loose?

But I still have a leak, and it looks like it is from the hose directly underneath the pump. I put a wrench on it and it did not budge. Is there something I am missing? Any ideas on this one? (pictures 2 and 3 - 4456 -7

Thanks to all...

Carl

If it is a seeping type of leak instead of a spraying type, maybe it is coming from another fitting that is coming out of the pump and is just draining down on the hose. Dry the hoses off real good and start the machine and see if you can see its origin, iF THE FITTING IS UNDER THE PUMP WHERE IT IS DIFFICULT to see maybe you can use a mirror and focus it in on the fitting and see that way. hope you get it fixed without too much trouble.

I also had a leak which appeared to be coming from hydraulic hoses, after studying everything carefully and watching the engine run at high rpm's. I noticed a tiny almost non excitant steady stream of oil coming down from under a valve cover gasket.

This was being picked up by, and blown from fan circulation down into that area onto hose's. Just something to think about. If you have not done it, think it was J.J. mentioned a dye you can get to put in your hydraulic system. Makes it easier to distinguish between engine oil and hydraulic oil. Might be worth pursuing.

I think Toy got it right. Looked under the peice with a mirror and another hex drain plug. Wrenched it a quarter turn and bob your uncle. Will see how it lasts through the day...

My Steiner had a bunch of leaks when I got it, and still has a few, but I did get all the ones in the underbelly to quit leaking, which was a chore in itself.
Keep after them, you'll get them sooner or later.

The very best method of finding a cooling system leak is to fill system full and get a pressure tester and pump up to recommended pressure and it will squirt out

This is an unpressurized hydraulic oil tank...

My recommendations would be, to get some strong detergent and clean everything that uses hydraulic fluid real good. Go to NAPA or some auto parts store, and get a small bottle of leak detector for oil, and add it to your hydraulic tank. Run the engine for about 30 min, Activating all the controls to get high pressure fluid to all parts. Get an ultraviolet light and shine it over everything, especially the fittings. If you have a leak, the hydraulic fluid will glow a greenish yellow. From then on , you will know where the leaks are by cleaning on a regular basis and shining the ultraviolet light. Try it, you will like it.
