Tony jacob who has been an SOS rebuilder for years recommends Valvoline VV813. Napa carries or can order it.

Btw, may I ask what the story is behind your username? Reason being I used to be a sound engineer back in Seattle. Had a few PA systems installed in clubs and a mobile PA for outdoor concerts. Most folks called me the 'soundguy'... ;)

Same deal. :)

Civil Engineer by day, sound engineer by night. ( Lately I've actually been working more doing sound than building roads! )

Good for you... I'm sure the sound gigs are a lot more fun!

Retired auto mechanic here. I was master certified and worked for FoMoCo for 28 years, debilitating injuries forced my retirement back in the late 90's. I have a good mechanical background in general but not that familiar with tractors as you can tell. I'm currently building a bigger shop so I can start a small business resto-modding classic cars & trucks. Fords of course.

Btw I found the trans filter and some AMBRA 134G fluid at the nearest New Holland dealer, only 75 miles away. Looks like a Saturday road trip & dinner out with the wife is in order. :dance1:

Nice deal.

Yup, most of the Tim the band gigs are more fun, get an occasional sleeper, that is booting, or a headliner that is a diva. Etc..

Lotsa interest in classic cars, I see clubs all over.

Okay guys, the filter cavitation problem seems to be mostly fixed. I say 'mostly' because it still went into making that noise briefly as I was test driving it. But it was fine at higher RPMs whereas it made noise anywhere above 1500 before. I reckon give it some time before passing final judgment.

The filter was $28 and came with a filter cover gasket. The AMBRA 134G was $79 for a 5 gallon bucket. It was noticeably thinner than 'universal' fluids I've seen by far. New Holland must be using it in everything now because the store shelves were well stocked with it, white buckets with orange lids everywhere.

Anyway I'm somewhat relieved, but the SOS transmission still makes a lot of noise in my opinion. More than what this old retired mechanic considers 'normal'. Most of the whining is coming from the front of the tranny, right below the steering column. It whines whether the tractor is moving or stationary, in gear or park. The noise level remains constant no matter what the RPMs.

As I said before, all the gears pull fine and it shifts firmly, even abruptly when not using the 'inching' pedal. No gunk or particles in the old fluid.

I guess I'll just have to get used to it... :confused3:

Thanks to all for your invaluable knowledge and much appreciated advice! :drink:

Yes there is. Apparently it is pumping like it's supposed to as the transmission is shifting as it should. And no particles of any kind in the old fluid.

There is also a 'torque limiting clutch' at the flywheel which I guess is similar to a torque converter. It too seems to be functioning correctly as it pulls strongly in any gear.

I'm going to try and take a video with my regular camera. I've never done a video before, I guess try and upload it on YouTube then link it here?

Thanks for the diagrams. Yep you're right, it's more of a disc clutch design, similar to the Ford 8.8 limited slip differential. Doesn't look like it would cause the type of whining I'm hearing, but maybe.

It could be that front pump. I'll see if I can get a video posted here in the next couple days.
