very cool! thanks.
I was actually thinking about putting wheels on it instead of making it stationary in the center of the room. While pondering the wheel idea it hit me, I have pipe scaffold and wheels to go with it, I think with very little work I can use the scaffold and wheels and fab up a clamp on boom with a 2500# winch. I will make the height of the boom adjustable so as the walls go up I can lift the boom (it doesn't need to move with every lift). I will use the winch to do the raising via a snatch block set up. I will take some pics when I get it set up. I can add ballast to the bottom of the scaffold as needed, cement blocks, the battery for the winch and the charger will all be ballast. The sawmill estimates the longest log (16') to weigh between 200 and 250 lbs. Hopefully this idea works out!

I'm building a log addition and I was hoping I could rig something in the center of the room (20x20) and use it to lift and swing the logs into place.
I'm not sure what it would be called so I'm having trouble finding anything on google. I don't need a long reach as I can stage the logs close, it's all backfilled.

The logs are 8"x8"x up to 16' , it's a one story (12 rows high) with a bunch of windows and a sliding door.

I have tongs, electric winches, material (wood and metal), snatch blocks and a 500' spool of cable, just need an image to copy.
thanks,
dave

OK help me out, how do you get a 20x20 room from 16' logs. from the pic the logs are one piece wall to wall. I am missing something here.

Try searching for "us army rigging manual." I think Free Military Army Manuals! should have it...

GLYford, that's an amazing find!
I never knew such a thing existed.

I used a Genie lift for mine, you are doing that many or that high...might be an easy solution

Well we got a good start on the addition yesterday. It turns out that the logs aren't all that heavy. They are kiln dried pine, up to 16' lengths.
I'll put up some pics later.
thanks again for all the input, I may need something in the future.

You may look into the Roustabout from Sumner Engineering

ROUST-A-BOUT Roust-A-Bout R-Series

The design might help?

Roust-a-bouts are not designed for use on rough terrain, they are meant to be used on flat level surfaces like concrete, at all the ones I have ever used were. Also, with a heavy load if raised too high they become top heavy and the potential to tip increases. I've used them for lifting lengths of pipe, so very similar to what you will be doing with logs. A stick of 8" pipe is probably close in weight to one of your logs. for your application you will not be able to lift your load directly over the landing point because the legs will stop you from rolling in close. that means you would have to swing the load out by hand pulling on it which increases the chance of tipping. They work great for lifting pipe into a rack or hangers above the ground, or up into pipe stands which is what they were designed to do, anything else is risky.

Build a gin pole, it will do all the work and make setting the logs easy.

You might find a Grasshopper useful though.

You could build your own fairly easily.

XXXXXXXXX

Even a 20' 8X8 shouldn't be so heavy that two grown men shouldn't be able to handle it by hand. I'm "elder" but even 5 years ago I could pick up a 20'+ 6X6 and carry it 20 feet or more on my shoulder and then stand it up on end and then pick it straight up and drop it into a post hole without tearing down the sides of the hole. Surely 2 grown men with 8' ladders and a couple pieces of rope could do this without blocks and tackles and booms and winches.

i realize you already stated to costly to rent. but wanting to double check anyhow...

look up in the old paper phone book, for "rental machinery" and if need look up on internet for "rental machinery" at say yellowpages .com and call places up to 2 hours away from you. rental prices can range widely a nearby place could charge twice as much as someone further away. and by time you count in having equipment hauled to you. you could have possibly a bigger machine and cheaper on rental costs.

you have option of....
--fork lifts
--TLB (tractor loader backhoe)
--skid steer with forks
--skid steer with backhoe option
--possibly a small crane
--some of the "truck deliverers" that haul supplies from menards, lowes, homedepot, other companies to your house. might have a rig that could be used to lift the logs up into place. have seen a good amount that have some sort of fork lift or truck rig setup, to say raise pallet of stuff up to "roof height" so shingles, air conditioners, etc... can be placed on a single story roof.
--boom truck, trucks electrical companies use to install new telephone poles. that most likely has a manlift basket, plus a hook below to deal with telephone poles.
--3pt fork lifts. that attach to back of a tractor. vs actual battery powered fork lift.
--if you had a tractor with FEL (front end loader) build a good back on bucket. so logs do not roll off of FEL and back onto the driver.
--build a long "boom" for a FEL to raise and lower logs.
