Mahindra 4025 4wd, Mahindra 4550B backhoe,
Had a pine tree fall and hit my backhoe attachment with just enough force to bend and crack one of the 90 degree elbows. Luckily there was a power-line run to stop the tree from doing more damage than it did. I attempted to remove the flared fitting from the elbow with no luck and looks like I will be needing to have a new fitting welded on. I'm not a welder or highly experienced with hydraulics, but am guessing that I will need to take the cylinder apart, also guys on youtube saying to replace all soft parts when repairing cylinders. I have some questions on this.

First this is an ANBH86A (4550B) model backhoe, data plate states it was built by Ansung Industrial. Looking at the 90 degree elbow and fitting I can not tell if the flare fitting is screwed in or if it is actually part of the elbow. Thought maybe someone else here has had work done (or done work themselves) on this design could shed some light on this. Also unsure of what threads I'm looking at they seem to line up on an 18 tpi.

Second, what are others thoughts on replacing soft parts? There's no leaks on the shaft and hoe was functioning as it should, so if I'm careful when disassembling, can I get by with carefully reassembling it as is? I've had a string of things breaking lately and money is tight... If I need to replace seals and such, where is best place to attempt to locate parts? It seems that finding repair parts on Mahindras can be quiet the hunt.

The elbow is threaded into the piston

Do you mean the top portion of the elbow? Because the small vertical pipe looks like a weld.

Yes the top portion should look like this.... elbow.jpg

Thanks, I will give that a try in the morning.

Wondering if you can drill out the busted piece from the end of the elbow and either tap it and use a pipe to JIC straight nipple or weld a nipple onto the broken piece. I don't think it's like the pic Peter posted, looks to be one piece but I can't tell for sure.
If you go the drill route, extend or retract the cylinder (can't tell which end is damaged) before you do anything, once you're done move it the opposite way to blow most of the crap out. and fish around with a small magnet to remove what wasn't forced out..........Mike

Yeah my son and I tried to break that fitting loose yesterday, no luck what so ever. I had tried drilling some to get a bigger size easy out in there previously(it would have been either a 4 or 5, but hit the back of the elbow before getting a good bite) it looks like it may have been a straight male to male fitting but made no sense to me that there was no nut shaped flange to back it out. Do you know what thread Mahindra supplier (Ansung) may have used? I am going to try draining the cylinder and heating the fitting to see if it is like the one Peter posted. If not then either tap threads or last option see about getting a new pipe or bung welded on.

I wonder if it was a fitting like this originally, in a 90 tho:
Your probably better off just cutting the busted fitting off, weld a straight hyd coupling on and using a 90 NPT to JIC elbow.
Don't forget to extend the cylinder so you don't melt the seals............Mike

It seems very possible, we could not get it loosened. I ordered a gland tool yesterday and plan on pulling the gland and piston out so I can clean the tube out. Some may say I'm being OCD, but I drilled on it before engaging the brain and want to be sure I am not going to have metal shavings left in there to eat away at the seals. Nothing worse than being in the middle of a project and that short-cut you took 6 months ago coming back to bite you in the hindparts.

You can try New England Tractor and then go to Mahindra parts (might need to do it twice) and then use the model search feature, once that comes up type in 4550b and hit enter.

NEW ENGLAND TRACTOR a division of Johnson Automotive Inc.

Looking at their site now, seems like the most comprehensive parts sites for Mahindra dealers without having to call their physical location. I see an option for manuals and that they list each the operator's, service and parts manuals. I had previously search for a true service manual and only had luck on ebay at around $200, New England Tractor has it for $82. Curious if anyone has this one and if it is more service than operators manual? I had read about another large dealer selling operator manuals as service/maintenance manuals previously. Something with tolerances, torque specs, etc. would be nice and the parts manual even more so.

By far the better way to do it. Be sure to let us know how you make out......Mike

The only thing that I ever ordered from New England Tractor was lube for the 4540, I had two tubes left but wanted more in inventory and my local dealer didn't have any lube in stock for three weeks. I don't think my local dealer liked it when I said you'll sell me a tractor but you don't have lube in your inventory.

I ended up ordering a case of lube from New England Tractor, great people to deal with and he was very nice while talking with him on the phone before I ordered.

So far not so good, got my tools in and either the gland is torqued pretty extreme or they used an adhesive. Going to call NET and price a rebuild kit in case I have to heat it. very tempted to clean up the end of the elbow and have a fitting welded on and run with it.

Just got off the phone with New England Tractor, they could not locate a part number for rebuild kit and couldn't say if Ansung (or whoever supplied the cylinder to Ansung) used an adhesive on the gland or not. Stated that ordering individual seals and o-rings could take weeks to months to get from Korea. Called the dealer I purchased the tractor from originally to speak with their lead mechanic (he's out sick today) as he had rebuilt the boom cylinder previously, and ask him if they had to heat it or not. Getting really tempted to purchase a fitting get it welded on and run with it. Other option is taking it to a local hydraulic repair shop.

That sucks try the local hydraulic shop and get a quote might not be that bad

I'm thinking along the same lines. Chances are it's a standard seal size, can't see why it'd be an oddball but.....you never know.Get a quote on them rebuilding it and just ask them to call you when they have it apart, go get it, weld a coupling over the removed busted fitting port and take it back to them. Ask what they'd want to do the complete job, may not be worth the aggravation of even looking at it.................Mike

Thinking along this line myself. Sucks paying to rebuild a cylinder that shows no sign of needing a rebuild, but spending more money trying to save money makes no sense either...

If you're concerned about crap in the cylinder you could cut that fitting off and stick a piece of hose over it then use the cylinder to draw in hydraulic oil and then push the cylinder again to flush the oil out. You could do that a few times and maybe you'd get any crap out of it.

Alternatively as others have suggested, a hydraulic shop could do the whole job for you at a pretty reasonably price. You could have them take it apart, check the seals, clean it out, and weld on the fitting. They should be able to do it all.
