Ok here I go....
It fires right up after sitting a day or two so I don't think it's a head gasket or it would be hyd locked or struggle to start.
Thanks for advise on brakes and axle seal. I looked at it closer tonight and it has tons of grass wrapped around it. I will start by cleaning that out. Maybe some is under the seal.
I pulled the water pump and all looked good then I looked in the now drained radiator and Bam there is the problem. It clogged.
Going to take it and have it cleaned and pressure tested and try again.
Next will be fixing the popping out of high range. I have it bungee corded back right now but little things like that bug me.View attachment 520112

You don't think someone used a ton of radiator seal in there ? Might be tough to back flush.

Disconnected the top hose from the radiator put the water hose in the radiator hose and clamped it tight and let it flush for 5mins

Yep, if it took the full force of water and ran until clear that's about all it can do.. It always worked for me.

I thought you said it took all the hose flow so it wasn't clogged:confused:

And yea use the bungie not worth changing out 2 gears

It took full water flow but I'm on a well. Maybe I don't have much pressure. Idk. But the radiator is clearly plugged.

I ditto what California said. Not fact but my opinion the worn cogs on those gears are the cause of the biggest majority of the jump outs. #4 and #25 on this drawing. TRANSMISSION_INTERNAL: Yanmar Tractor Parts
I spout generalities, Winston replies with detailed specifics. This is a great group!

Winston I would have thought it was gears on adjacent shafts that were the problem. #4 and 25 are adjacent on the same shaft. Do they slide together and engage, somewhat like a syncro ring?

I had same thing happen on my 1700, had radiator rodded out and now no overheating at all. I back flushed before also

yep a rodded out radiator will give many more years of service. its a lost art and not manyplaces anymore that do that stuff, esp in small towns.

Thanks! I see now in the transmission diagram that there are pins on that gear.

It looks like it would be a nightmare to tear down the transmission far enough to replace that gear. I have a YM240 Flat Rate Book (labor hours allowed by Yanmar-USA for warranty work) out at the ranch. I'll get back over there in a couple of days and see how many hours that should take. Getting the fixed-mount loader off mine would be another few hours.

I recall Danny said the gear with pins has to be replaced and also the gear it meshes into. Is that your recollection of what Bruce described?

Clemsonfor the radiator on my YM240 was rodded out just before I bought it and the cooling has been flawless all the time I've owned it. The prior short-term owner sorted out a few issues like this, but he created several more like installing a badly rebuilt starter of the wrong model. (I eventually replaced it). He missed his most significant problem: He had a suburban house with an ancient diesel tank out back from when it was a farm. The crummy fuel he tried to run in the YM240 defeated all his efforts to make the thing start and run properly. The stuff burned my eyes so badly that I swapped in fresh fuel and that let it run like Yanmar intended. My purchase went from what had seemed like a gamble to just ordinary maintenance needed.

Dirtracer take that radiator to a pro to clean out and repair. I agree it's likely clogged with radiator sealer. Your prior owner sounds like mine!
