Woops, looks like the other 17 is what I was thinking of. The prices for the 17HM2 ammo were so much higher than for 22LR that the conversion didn't interest me excecpt to know that the 10/22 is even more versatile than before.

My uncle has been catching possums in home made rabbit boxes. He lets them out in an open field and sends them to their maker with #1 buckshot. I can assure you that they do not walk away from this.

Folks around here used to catch, fatten up and eat them. I've never eaten possum. They say it is very greasey.

A friend of mine caught a baby one and raised it as a pet. It used a litter box like a cat. Begged people to pick it up. Got fat as a hog and died after about 3 years...probably of heart problems. They fed it too much.

First, I'm pretty sure that Jed, Ellie Maye, Jethro and Granny came from Tennessee or Kentucky and second, Virginia is about a state away from SC (but we are on the same coast.) You are also mistaken about us South Carolinians being hillbillys. We don't have the mountains required to produce a hillbilly. But we have another name for what you are talking about, which I won't mention here for fear of offending family members and at least a few of us here at TBN, but suffice it to say that they (we) make the Beverly Hillbillys look like well mannered sophisticates from Boston.

Looked up BH on internet, says they were from Bugtussel, but no state given (execs at studio didn't want to offend anyone). I get that a lot "wrong on several accounts". The Beverly Hillbillies were from the Ozark Mountains which are located mostly in Northwest Arkansas. I am pretty sure I remember an episode where they mentioned being from Arkansas, near the same area as Dogpatch, where Lil Abner was from.
And Granny was an expert at cooking possum pie.

The Ozark Mountains are for a fact in NE AR but in NW OK and SE MO too. I don't ever remember them mentioning being from AR. Bugtussle yes but that's in OK?

Sorry, but that's NW AR, not NE. And NE OK, not NW. And SW MO, not SE.
And I don't believe that they changed the name from Flowery Mound OK to Bugtussle OK until after the Beverly Hillbillies came out in order to gain publicity, just like Marble Falls AR changed it's name to Dogpatch when they built the theme park there and changed it back to Marble Falls after Dogpatch closed.
