Yep, when it came to hog killing time, the 22 was the weapon of choice. Preferably a 22 short or long.

Hog killing time here, choice was 22 short, didn't want to find a lead pellet in a shoulder. Neighbor's weapon of choice was, tie them up to a post real close, straddle their shoulders and thump them between the eyes with the flat end of a single bit axe, it was a comical thing to watch, corncob pipe hanging out of his mouth, and he was left handed, and they usually just collapsed in a heap, and my dad would flip the hog over and stick it in the throat and let it bleed. That was 50 some years ago, today there would be all kind of org's show up and put the whole bunch under the jail.

I've got a pellet rifle that someone gave me, a Benjamin I think, and it will shoot a .177 pellet with the same muzzle velocity as a 22 short...maybe more. It will drop a squirrel from way up in a pine tree. A well placed shot on a possum close up would do the trick. It is almost as loud as a 22 though.

True, a 22 head shot will kill a possum or coon MOST of the time as I have done it many times over the years while coonhunting. But I always remember the time I took my big old Redbone coonhunting in my new Bronco. I just put a little rug in back for him to lay on and he would never move. After we treed the coon I made my head shot and put the dead coon in a box in the Bronco and loaded up ole Spike and headed home. Well, halfway home, on the highway, that ole coon came back to life and all he** broke loose. By the time I got my truck pulled over to the side of the road there was fur, blood, coon pieces and everything else all over the insides of my new Bronco and all over me. The next year I bought a pick-up truck.
