Folks,

Can someone tell me the correct size and type of adapters needed? I just had a frustrating afternoon trying to connect the hydraulics for the new Power Sweeper to my new PT425. I know these quick connectors get easier with use, but the issue is that I cannot get enough leverage to pop the connector. There is very little clearance below the connectors preventing a firm grasp of the connector. A 45 degree or right angle adapter pointing up would give the opportunity for more downward leverage. A big strong neighbor was able to eventually make the connections with some difficulty. Very Frustrating!

If there is any residual pressure in the PT, or the implement, the connection will be difficult. The sleeves on some QD's push to connect. Some also turn and pull.

Would turning off the tractor relieve the residual pressure? Any other way of doing it? We were sliding the sleeve back, then pushing the male connector pass the small bearings to click then release sleeve. They seem to work that way. We eventually achieved connections, but it was hard.

i think there are posts here explaining what to do to connect. I usually turn off the tractor. When storing the equipment, i connect the supplies and returns together. When using the auxillary PTO, i turn off the tractor and work the lever up and down a few times, holding at each end for several seconds. Even then, sometimes it can still be hard. I keep a rubber strap wrapped around the ROPS post so i can use it to hold the lever up or down while connecting. I have not had to do that for a long time since connecting the supply and return during storage helps dramatically. I do not remember having trouble with the PTO but i have always had the tractor off for that.

Thanks Ken. It is much easier to connect after holding the lever up for 3 seconds. The QDs on the attachment were new -- once the bearings were lubricated in use, they were easier to connect. Still, they are harder than should be. I may still get the right angle adapters for the 1/4 size.

On my 1850 i have to shut the engine down to change out the ALT PTO connectors. Once you unlock an implement you pressurize that line and I can never get the circuit to reconnect unless I shut down and cycle the circuit.

Just my 2c

Yes, I forgot to mention that I shutoff the tractor as well.

Thanks folks!

Exactly!!! You need to cycle the circuit after it is off.

Best of luck. They do get easier after a few uses.

That is the great thing about this place. After you beat yourself around the head and shoulders for hours, you come here and in 5 minutes find the right way to do something.

My Robin engine died last night... Ran out of gas. Refilled the tank, started it, got big cloud of white smoke. Immediately stopped it. Heard a gurgling noise, pulled off the air filter, and found the carburator overflowing with gas. Pulled the sparkplugs, let it sit awhile. When I started it, gas shot out the exhaust. Not a good sign. Again, pulled the sparkplugs, waited an hour, started again. Still gas shooting out the exhaust. The carburator has not repeated it's trick, so if I did have a stuck float valve, it broke free.

Started to get me worried about valves, so I pulled the crankcase covers, checked that the rockers did indeed cycle up and down while the cylinders moved. Verified with a straw that the cylinders went in and out. Came inside, and read one of Mossroad's cold weather starting/engine flooding stories, and went to bed much relieved that maybe I didn't destroy my engine. I will see how it runs today after it has sat overnight to let gas evaporate out of the cylinders.

That is some serious flooding. Hope its okay today. My neighbor with the Kubota warned me last week to never let my new tractor run out of gas. Maybe he was refering to something like you are experiencing. Anyway, time to go buy some gas.

Good Luck!

Sounds like the float is stuck in the carb.

It ran great today. No sign of flooding or stuck float. Good thing, since I am in the process of moving, and was depending on it to move 2700# of sailboat out of the middle of a grassy/snowy lor, as well as fetch all the heavier PT implements from the back shed.

I was crossing my fingers this morning. Leaving it overnight with the sparkplugs pulled, and a heater both aimed at the engine tub and the hydraulic tank seemed to have done the trick.

You neighbor probably has a diesel engine that does not self prime if it runs out of fuel. It is a messy, stinky job to prime it. Your gas engine should not have that problem, ever.

You will also find that if you disconnect an implement and let it sit in the hot sun for a few hour, you may have difficulty re-connecting the hydraulic hoses. The hydraulic fluid in the implement will expand and put just enough pressure on the quick attach fitting that you will not be able to push it on by hand. Keep a flat punch or grind the tip off of a phillips screwdriver around. Put a rag in the connector then press the blunt tip against the ball in the connector and give it a slight tap with a hammer. One or two tiny drops of hydraulic fluid will come out and that itty bitty amount is enough to relieve the pressure on the connector.

As for what others have told you about cycling the auxiliary PTO handle a couple times after you shut off the tractor... that should work well on the tractor side of the connectors.

Hope that helps. ;)
