I have a Brush Cutter that the plastic safety PTO shield is a bit torn up on and it rotates because it has not chains. How do I go about measuring the length I need for a new one? The cutter itself is a Midwest in good shape.
Need some advise

Unless you have $$ to burn, I wouldn't bother. That PTO shield is more for keeping grease from slinging than anything else and the more chains you have in the rotating mix just makes more flailing problems if you know what I mean.

I agree, as you won't ever, ever, ever be standing around that PTO when it is running. Nor should anyone else be.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I lost the chains off my bushhog at some time??? and replaced with a piece of cord that I tie off on the tractor to stop the shield from spinning. The purpose of the shield is to prevent your clothing from getting tangled in the spinning PTO shaft and demolishing your body. Even if the shield is spinning with the shaft chances are it would prevent that from happening if you did get against it.

Mine never had a chain. It rotates. But thats OK. As Glenn said (and beenthere implied), it is there for your protection. If something or someone gets caught in it, it will stop. The shaft will not.

Mow naked like I do. Then you won't have any problem with clothing getting caught in the PTO.

To All:
If you really have to ride your tractor "in the buff" always, always carry a oil check towel of appropriate size under your tractor seat to use as a loin cloth in the case you need to interact with unexpected visitors (They may be your co-workers.). I do not think anybody will have to worry about getting hung up with the PTO while naked. Jay
