My 1600 dipstick is also 8". I would have filled it 3/4 then carefully checked it. The only other dipstick is for the manual steering box. I would say drain the extra and run the tractor. Does your 1600 have a loader? That might change the oil amount.

I don't have a loader, I am going to use it mainly for mowing and towing. Glad to know that the dipstick is the right one. I did at least use half my brain and drained the oil out slow enough to save the extra. How many quarts are you running in your 1600 for the trans/rear end? I do have a smaller dipstick I think about 4 inches for hydraulic fluid. Much appreciate it Wolfy and thanks again.

Is the tractor on flat ground when you measure? dip stick cap should not be screwed in in order to read liq. level. transmission and diffy are interconnected by opening in the casting so the hyd fluid should seek the same level. Amount of trapped fluid in the lift cylinder (ie. 3 point lift) can have effect of the apparent level reading. Did you run the tractor to circulate the oil thru the system before you made your reading?

Im not sure what my tractor holds, since I fill it by the dipstick. The owner's manual does call for 21 quarts though. The 1600s made excellent mowers though. Plenty of torque and gears to work with. I use gears M-2 and M-3. And it seems like I can mow forever on a few gallons of diesel.

Hello JC thanks for the post. I had the tractor on level ground and did not screw in the dipstick. I checked the fluid before and after running it. Not sure about the 3 point lift. I don't have a loader but I did have the bush hog lowered completely on the ground. When I got the 1600 it had a few problems and the maintenance had been neglected some but all in all it is pretty sound. Appreciate the help.

I would agree. It is really good on fuel. Now that I know I have the correct dipstick I will adjust the oil as it requires. I was told it has a 185 degree thermostat. On the temperature gauge it goes about 1/2 inch from the red before it fully opens then it stays put. I will have to check that with my meter. Thanks again Wolfy.

Take a look at the link below, it should give you some guidance on how to interpret temp reading. With 3 point down all the oil trapped in the 3 point lift cylinder is diverted of to the sump so level is at the max possible. I don't sweat it as long as you put proper volume of hyd fluid in.

so for the transmision its hydro fluid and for the gear box its 90 weight gear oil is that wright?

Most Fords use m2c-134 oil including the Shibura built ones. My 1700 used suffix "B" or newer, I think the "D" is multi-viscosity oil.

What is the difference between transmission and gear box? are you talking hydrostatic transmission ?. If you have manual transmission then the gear box/transmission is the same and has Ford-134. You don't use 90 weight oil anywhere. yu would use the same oil in the front drive is you have 4WD.
