Gary makes a lot of great points. I went looking for a FEL for the FIL old MF 265 and for a few dollars ($7200) more came home with a 1983 JD 310B backhoe. It as slop for sure but starts before I can get my finger off the start button and had done a lot of digging and dozer work taking down large trees. I use it for things like setting a used engine out of the back of the PU bed, unloading supplies, moving equipment, etc too.
I agree if there is only digging needs from time to time just rent or hire a small trackhoe.
Do look at all of your options. I agree nearly new can be almost as much as new. For the most bang you have to get out 10+ years. The nice thing about 30 year old equipment in far condition it will do what it did new. Owning some tools and knowing is a plus however.
