I picked-up a hunk of steel (mild) at a garage sale and thought it will make a good counter weight. It's heavy, but I don't know how much? Could someone tell me the weight of a cubic inch of mild steel?

The piece is 4& 3/4, by 9& 3/4, by 19& 3/4 inches long. I know, go weigh it, but I can't pick it up anymore till I build the 3pt. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I'm all tuckered out.. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Thanks George

Hi George,

Steel weighs 3.4 lbs per square inch of cross sectional area per foot of length.

So take your cross sectional area, multiply by 3.4, and then multiply by how long in feet. Your answer will be in pounds.

If I had a calculator here, I would do the math for you also.

Good luck,

Yooper Dave

Thank's Yooper Dave, that's what I needed to know. My math, (which is only close) says about 224#'s. That will be a good weight for what I want to do. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have a good one....George

Density is about .282 #/in^3.
Therefore 4.75*9.75*19.75*.283 = 258#
