Needed new truck, or just wanted one?

The Toyota bought new in 1986 only had 280,000 miles on it but some high school kid totalled it last spring. I got a 2004 Dodge with 130,000 miles on it which cost 1/2 of the original sales price, or 1/3 to 1/4 of a new truck. Hopefully the Dodge will last a while. My car bought new in 2002 only has 310,000 miles. I hope to get 600,000 miles out of it. I really need to get the house paid off and the Dodge before I replace the car. Some of my other cars had 200,000 -300,000 before I got rid of them.

OP here...it always amazes me when I read about owners who have to drive as much as folks like you do. My brother currently has an '01 Ranger Sport Trac that is nearing 200,000, which to me is a lot, but they say the average is about 15-20,000 per year. I should feel lucky I am retired, when I was working my commute put more miles on our vehicles a week than I usually put on them in two months now.

Traded in my '99 Dodge Dakota 4x4 ext. cab on an '07 Silverado Crew cab 4x4,5.3 motor. Very nice truck for me and only 80,000 miles on it. My Dodge had 180,000 plus and was needing a lot of maintenance.
The Silverado is actually my first full size truck. Always had S-10s and Rangers before. I really only hauled firewood and dirt bikes then though.
I really like the Silverado so far. It even gets better fuel mileage than my Dakota did.

I always want something else but as I have grown older I have become more conservative...
My last two cars made it to 185K and 225K miles...
My current car has 150K miles and runs great...
My last truck was sold with 138K miles and was in great shape but I wanted a F350 crew 4x4 dually...
Got a good deal on one after owning the 92 F250 10 years...
I typically keep a vehicle 10 years anyway so it was time...
My current ride has been owned 7 years but I plan on keeping it until I die...
I'll probably buy a smaller commuter car later to keep the miles off it...
Only 98K on an 03 7.3 diesel...
Life is good...

Pay tax on the difference only.

Chris

It is the same in ohio when you trade in. Usually if the trade has some value, the tax difference makes up for any advantage in trying to sell yourself.

On topic, I usually replace when needs change. I have also traded when a vehicle has started to nickle and dime.
