I hear about only paying the sales tax on the "balance, after trade" here on TBN. Guys kinda forget that each state is different.

Michigan indeed taxes the new vehicle sales price. Period. Trade or no trade has absolutely nothing to do with it.
It is comforting to see Illinois is not the only ones with greedy lawmakers .
I know I am not rationalizing , ( as our politicians do  ) but ... a new vehicle gets taxed , then gets taxed again and again everytime it is traded .... so does that mean when you see someone buy something used at a yard sale or auction , it should be taxed again ?

The Toyota bought new in 1986 only had 280,000 miles on it but some high school kid totalled it last spring. I got a 2004 Dodge with 130,000 miles on it which cost 1/2 of the original sales price, or 1/3 to 1/4 of a new truck. Hopefully the Dodge will last a while. My car bought new in 2002 only has 310,000 miles. I hope to get 600,000 miles out of it. I really need to get the house paid off and the Dodge before I replace the car. Some of my other cars had 200,000 -300,000 before I got rid of them.

i just ( end of sept ) replaced my every day driver 4x4 98 dodge ram 1500 single cab.. I replaced it with a 4x4 99 ford f350 crew cab drw, diesel.

I wanted the reliability and lifespan of that 7.3, I needed the 4x4 same as the dodge.. i wanted the crew cab, but would have bought a single cab or king cab, had one come up.. I wanted the DRW for stability when towing.

too many times I pulled a 16' tandem loaded to max legal weight, and got the load a bit wrong, and the dodge felt it.. not that the dodge was bad.. i was just pulling max with it, and you had to load 100% perfect.

witht he f350 I have better braking capability, more truck to trailer weight, more rubber ont he road to help with control, and in the end, i'm getting no wore milage with a 7.3 diesel hauling the average loads the dodge hauled with a 5.9 gasser.

unloaded, the dodge got a lil better fuel economy thant the 7.3d unloaded. loaded fully, the dodge got WORSE milage than the 7.3 diesel loaded to the same level.

just made a pull yesterday.. I know for sure I had the trailer loaded wrong on the way out., but loaded correct on the way back.

felt the same either way.. safe... because of the bigger truck.

on the dodge I would have pulled over and shifted the load on the roadside or else have to white knuckle it at 40mph watching for fishtailing..

i consider my trade out one for safety more than anything... more so than brand or other options, like the cab..e tc..

I was in both categories a few monthes back. My 03 Dmax had cab corner and rocker rust, needed brake and fuel lines, most the inst. cluster lights were out, the paint was dull, etc. etc. I drove new 3/4 tons from GM and Ford, and while they were realy nice, I did not like any of them as much as my current truck when it was in good condition, and I could not get over putting 20 grand down and having to finance another 27k

My solution was to take around 6k out of my proposed down payment and restore my 03. I pulled the bed, front clip, doors, entire interior except dash and headliner, sent all the peices parts to the body shop and had new full rockers and cab corners put in, then had the sides and hood repainted and the roof and gate wet sanded and buffed. I blasted, encapsulated and rhino lined the frame, replaced all the hard lines, brakes, shocks etc. I gave all the interior peices a good cleaning, and steam cleaned the carpet and seats before I reassembled the interior on top of my newly rhino lined floors and dynamat.

I could not be happier with how it came out, the paint and body appearance is nearly showroom, and thanks to the rhino lining and dynamat, It feels more solid and air tight than it did when new. I had a guy park next to me at my local convenient store in an 06 2500 yesterday, and he commented on how clean and nice mine was {it was all washed and armor alled up!}. He asked what year it was, and when I told him it was an 03, He didnt beleive me, LOL, that is until I showed him that it had nearly 119k on it.

Now that my truck looks, smells, and drives better than new, I do not need a new one, and found that I no longer even bother giving those new ones a second look. But boy did it take alot of time and work to get there !!!!

I have a couple, but i did not take as many as I probably should have. They are scattered between my old and new phone, as well as my camera. I will try to get them on here in the next couple of days.

My last truck purchase was way more want than need although I convinced myself I needed it. The old one was an '07 Silverado Crew Cab 2WD that when I bought it, was sure that I didn't need 4WD and adamant about not getting it. Well, after driving down turn rows on farms that we were looking to buy and getting stuck twice in 10 minutes, and then getting stuck in my front yard with a small trailer attached, (the ground was pretty soggy at the time) I changed my tune and my wife fortunately agreed to let me trade that for a 4WD. Haven't been stuck since and I've driven down rutted turn rows, across plowed fields and all over the farm in it!

You may not ALWAYS NEED four wheel drive, but when you NEED it, you'll ALWAYS be glad you got it!!

Like one of my favorite sayings goes:

"Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it...."
