Neighbor doesn't mow frequently enough

Since you have a good relationship with him, why don't you tell him you'd like to turn it into a hayfield and bale it? That solves 2 problems, his pride stays in tact as he isn't asking for help but, instead doing you a favor and you get to keep the field at a height you'd like to.

I actually did something somewhat similar to that. It's one of those things he wants to do hisself, but physically he's at the point that he can't. Just doesn't want to let go.

Wow. Will your mower even touch that now? You say he got hurt in a "batwing incident"? How hurt, and is his mower now down? If I thought I had a mower that could handle it, I think I'd just go mow it and not even mention it to him. He's your friend, and now sounds like he's hurt. Sounds like "favor time". If your mower can't handle it, how much can you rent a flail mower for in your area? Don't know how much ground you need to mow, but maybe a weekend flail rental can take it all down?

If he's already hurt, and his son is trying to mow now, sounds like a recipe for another injury. If it was my friend/neighbor (mine is both to me too), I'd just mow it already, and act surprised when he finds out, telling him "I though you mowed it?"

Batwing can knock it down. He's hurt bad enough that he for sure can't do that. So hot right now hard for anyone without cabbed tractor to tackle it. And we both dont have one.

After a bit, I suspect I'll team up with his son and together we finish it off.

My "pasture" was too wet to mow until a couple of months later than usual, so the grass was 6' high in places, certainly thicker than usual also. I have been working on it, the tall stuff has to be mowed several times to get it looking decent. I was wishing I had a flail mower at times, but know that in normal years I can handle it with my finish mower.

Will say I let mine get out of hand this year... I usually plant rye early after the oats have started to rust... this keeps the Johnson grass at bay but not this year... I let it slide and had a long slow day of mowing.. problem with cutting this tall stemy bunch grass is not the cut its getting it to clear from under the mower after it lays over

Mowed through a few patches of 6-8' high grass like that around here too. Never knew wat it was (never really cared). But sure had to go slow through it and give the mower ample time to spit it out

Reed canary grass is a pain. My cows don't like it so it gets left alone to grow like that it wet areas. It never has spread to speak of since it likes/needs wet soil. In the creek the roots dangle into the water which must be quite effective in feeding the plant to grow that tall.

Yes, the late rains kept me from mowing too. By the time i could get out to the fields, it was 6' high. I'd push the rough cut mower into it, then reverse and let the mower clear. Once i got a row cut in, i could go ahead and cut half a swath with out too much trouble. In places, i was still throwing a bit of of water in low places.

My mower mounts on the front of the tractor, which is nice, as it cuts before the tractor has a change to knock it down.
