Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

Every one around including LEO's were aware of this whole thing, the lady with the goats and dogs was a sheriff's deputy. Things have changed but back then every thing was growing like crazy and the LEO's had way too much on their plate.

12 years ago, at our last place, we had 5.5 acres at an intersection of 2 main dirt roads, and not far from a heavily travelled paved road. We didn't fence it because the county said they were going to build a new 6 lane road that would affect our South & East property lines and they would not do any fence work. People from town were always throwing out both dogs and cats and we kept 3 dogs and a couple of cats, the rest we called the animal control or took to the nearest shelter.

During this time we had a neighbor who's teenage son got a Rottweiler that ran loose and killed everything it could get to including 2 of our Yorkies that I had out for a walk and was within 20 yards when it hit them. I talked to the neighbor who I was on good terms with and he said he would get rid of the dog. Well he didn't and a week or so it later went to another neighbor ladies house and killed her 2 goats and one of her dogs and tore up another of her dogs costing a fortune in vet bills.She talked to him and again he said he would get rid of the dog but didn't. A week or so later another neighbor who had an Australian Shepherd that was in her first heat cycle and kept in the house, his place was fenced and the Rot dug under the fence, tore the screen door off the house and drug the young Aussie out in the front yard and killed it in front of their 2 young daughters. Again he said he would take care of the dog but didn't. A week or so later it came back to our place and killed a young lab. mix that we had taken in as a drop off.

This time I had enough so I went over to his place with my .270 and told him " If you want to do it here's the gun, if not I'll do it". He said "I can't" so I Did. End of problem. We still waved when we saw each other but it wasn't a warm relationship after that.

Just before we moved his son got a pair of American Bulldogs with plans to breed them.One of our old neighbors, who I'm still good friends with told me they are often out and running through the area but haven't caused any problems yet as far as he knows.

Some people should not have dogs and are just too dumb to know it.

I had a Rotty from 1986 to maybe 1998. He was incredibly friendly, never even growled at anything but a squirrel. Im on my 2nd doberman and 2nd Weimariner..all are extremely friendly aside from the Weim we have now ( a rescue ) is suspicious of new people..for about 5 minutes until you pat him..then you can't get rid of him. I sincerely believe its the people not the dog.

I had a Rotty from 1986 to maybe 1998. He was incredibly friendly, never even growled at anything but a squirrel. Im on my 2nd doberman and 2nd Weimariner..all are extremely friendly aside from the Weim we have now ( a rescue ) is suspicious of new people..for about 5 minutes until you pat him..then you can't get rid of him. I sincerely believe its the people not the dog.

Our first family dog was a Rott as well. She was the most gentle of any dog, including with newborn babies and toddler rug rats. Her name was Shiloh, and the kids still talk about missing her after 30 years... A dog only knows what it is taught, look around the world to see what people do to each other; teaching a dog to be mean isn't a stretch.

Part of it's how they are raised yet another part of how a dog turns out is from it's breeding... which goes right back to the owner. If somebody is willing to get a dog from parents of marginable temperament that's exactly what they will end up with.

The best thing you can do is never discuss these things with anyone and for darn sure never post anything about them.

Wise advice... and the reason I've not discussed the details of my own situation, which is very relevant right now.

I've been here long enough to know how these "loose dog issues" play out...

1 - Shoot, shovel, shut up on the dog.
2 - Certain breeds of dogs are dangerous and no one has a right to own one.
3 - Some people who own dogs are idiots and you can fix stupid.

I usually like dogs for the most part. I can visit with the neighbor's dogs for a few minutes. There are a few strays that wander around and get into things, but so far haven't posed a threat.

I could never have one though. Too much involved. Don't want one inside and can't keep anything caged. And I can't stand barking.

Insurance is giving me enough grief over the wood stove. Dog would just add to that.

I love dogs however having one chase me in my garage one day I’m not real trusting of strays anymore.

Not sure if there are hard and fast rules. A young lady here has a pit bull that she rescued from some real A-holes. It was not a pup, but it has turned out to be the sweetest dog you can imagine....it should have been the other way. A young couple, who are losers, have a dog breed that should be good but nips people quite often. One of my ex-girlfriends had a Chow-chow that was a great dog, when it passed away she got another and it turned out very aggressive

Some people have no business having a dog and could screw up the Lords prayer. But some dogs are just "bad".

I know a guy that breeds and trains Walker's. He must have 15-20 of them. Some need to be put down.

The problems I was having with a neighbor's dogs running loose ended well. I talked to him about them a couple of times warning that if the one showing aggression ever showed aggression towards my wife or children I would shoot it. He tried keeping it home but it kept coming over.

One day I and my wife were working on the fence about 250 yards down the road from his drive. And the aggressive one started coming, barking aggressively. I got my wife back in the truck and knew I had to do something quick. I pulled my 9mm, the dog was about 25 yards away and closing. I put one round in the ground a few feet to my right. I did't know dog could turn around that fast.

I called the neighbor. He had heard the shot. I emphasized I didn't shoot at the dog but if it had kept coming I would.

He stopped me a couple of weeks later wanting to know if I had shot one of the other dogs running loose. I told him I had not but I mentioned that I knew several others were unhappy with the loose dogs chasing game and growling at people.

Shortly after that, he had a six foot high welded wire fence installed around 10 acres of his place. As far as I know the aggressive one has never gotten out. One of the small ones occasionally squeezes out at the gate but they get it back in pretty quickly.

I don't want a shoot a dog or a cat but if they show aggression at my wife or my children I will protect mine with force, if necessary, appropriate for the situation.
