We have a law here in Missouri, any cattle on your property can be rounded up and taken to the sale barn. You can call one of the cattle hauler truck operators to come and get them and take them in for sale. Even a rangy old cow is worth some money. They sell in the "canner and cutter" class of animal. They go into processed meat.

Here's how Kansas handles stray cattle.

47-122a. Livestock running at large; taking up such livestock by county sheriff; notice; sale; disposition of proceeds of sale; consolidated law enforcement department. (a) Whenever the owner or the owner's authorized agent allows any livestock to run at large, in violation of K.S.A. 47-122, and amendments thereto, and such livestock remains on the property of another person, at the request of such person upon whose property the livestock are running at large, the sheriff of the county in which such livestock are running at large may take such livestock into custody and retain them in a secure holding area.

(b) The county sheriff shall give notice to the owner or the owner's authorized agent within 24 hours after taking such livestock into custody that the owner or the owner's authorized agent has 10 days within which to claim such livestock and to pay all actual costs for taking up, keeping and feeding of such livestock.

(c) If the owner or the owner's authorized agent fails to claim the livestock and to pay all actual costs within the ten-day period, the county sheriff shall cause the livestock to be delivered to a public livestock market or to a secure holding area approved by the animal health commissioner. If the livestock is delivered to the market, the county sheriff shall cause such livestock to be sold at such market to the highest bidder for cash. Livestock held in a secure holding area other than a livestock market shall be advertised by the county sheriff in the official county newspaper and sold to the highest bidder for cash.

(d) The county sheriff shall pay out of the proceeds from the sale of such livestock, all actual costs for taking up, keeping and feeding of such livestock. Any proceeds remaining in the hands of the sheriff after payment of all actual costs, shall be paid to the owner of the livestock or the owner's authorized agent. If the owner or the owner's authorized agent is not known or cannot be located, the proceeds remaining after the payment of actual costs shall be paid to the county treasurer of the county in which the livestock were running at large. Such funds shall be deposited by the county treasurer in the county's special stray fund provided for in K.S.A. 47-239, and amendments thereto.

(e) In counties having a consolidated law enforcement department, the provisions of this section relating to sheriffs shall be deemed to refer to such department.

That is Not a half bad idea. It is right up there with coffee-mates "triple churned" advertisement. You take a totally non dairy creamer then you talk about "churning" it 3 times? never have figured that one out.

Greg, you and I just gotta learn to go with it.....

Estray Laws in Texas.

Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers | Livestock Laws

>>>>> According to the Chapter 142 of the Texas Agriculture Code, the person in possession of the estray, or stray livestock, is required to “report the presence of the estray to the sheriff of the county in which the estray is discovered.”

There is no such thing as finders keepers regarding estray livestock in Texas or Oklahoma. The finder of an estray may be charged with “Theft of Livestock” if he or she disposed of the estray outside of the estray procedure (Section 142 of the Texas Agriculture Code and Title 4-85.3 of the Oklahoma Animal Code).

Please assist the sheriff by providing the location, number and description of the estray livestock.<<<<<<<

This discussion has taken a rather interesting curve. Reading some of the recent comments makes me realize how much different it is as you head west. We don't have the cattle which you do, hence don't need the laws some of you are citing from the various states. I'm not complaining or disagreeing, just pointing out the difference. :2cents:

I just called the local sale barn to be sure they weren't closed. Kind of interesting and different. Can bring animals in to sell, but asked to unload and not come in. Can come in later after sale to pick up check, or wait for it to be mailed. Only buyer are asked to be in the sale barn, and to keep distance from each other. When coming to PU check they'll make sure no one else is in the office area.

I was just wondering what would happen if stray cattle were rounded up and according to the law there was no place to sell them. That would be a new problem.

It is a brave new world. Old algorithms don't apply :)

One good thing, my dog is well disciplined. She's my buddy and goes just about anywhere my truck goes. I don't take her to the "city" (being Kansas City) 'cause folks up there don't understand how dogs live and survive. I understand the heat in a vehicle and how it takes the life out of anything living. But if I leave my windows totally down, am I causing my dog harm. Now there is water in the truck. There is always a foiled windshield protector/reflector up when parked (dog or not). If my dog got too hot she would jump out and lay under the truck until I came back, weather it was 5 minutes or 5 hours. However, city folk would contact the constable and I'd be given a ticket.

I can't stick my fingers in my mouth and whistle, so I taught my dog to come to me when I clap. She can be a couple of hundred yards away and when she hears the clapping, tilts her head to confirm what she heard, then heads pal-mal to me. I can tell her to "set-stay" at a gate and animals don't move through there. Saves me a lot of time and crawling on and off a tractor.

A dog can be taught to not stray, that's for sure, just takes time, and constant discipline with affection. Not much different that training a horse. I have 3 acres behind the house that has field fence around three sides. She can go back there a run for hours and quit when she wants. When she's done she comes back to the shop and lays down in her shade spot.

News flash... there are as many locals who are "born and bred" who are given 5 acres of land by their parents who have the exact same ignorant mentality that they are given free rights to the rest of the community. Ignorance and a lack of respect for others isn't dictated by where you are born IMO, but by your upbringing, particularly when it comes to peoples ideas of what their dogs are allowed to do.

Owning a dog is a responsibilty and costs money.

Not a news flash to me there are people of all kinds that lack respect for themselves and much less others, and owning dogs is a responsibility and costs money, I keep no less than 8 hounds at any given time , but when I turn mine out they have 96,000 acres to hunt on and I have tracking/training collars so they don't get out of pocket.

I taught Willard "sign language". If I'm on the tractor and want him to stay I simply hold up my hand palm toward him. He sits down. If I'm running the chainsaw and falling a tree I holler "HEY" to get his attention and then point whatever direction I want him to go and he'll go there and sit down, out of the way. I'm no dog trainer. But I communicate with him at his level.

As D2Cat said, I could leave Willard in the truck with the windows down and he'll be there when I get back. All that requires is saying "stay" when I get out.

You are a smart dog ain't ya Willard!!!!
