I remember like it was yesterday watching my dad load his pistol to walk up to the neighbors property kill the GS that attacked me. My mom pleaded with him not to do it while we were waiting for the ambulance and he caved in to her. She may have saved his life, because Lord only knows what the dog owner would have done to my dad seeing him walk onto their property intending to kill their dog.
Now I am a father and have mixed feelings about what I would do.
My brother was about 12 or 13 and my sister would have been about 8 or 9. They were walking on the county line road to school. The new neighbor ladies that just moved in had a large chow dog. It attacked them both, but my brother managed to get some rocks and with sisters help to keep handing him rocks from the ditch they managed to escape. My brother came back home and wanted to take his Ruger single six revolver back and kill the dog. Dad would not let him do that, and instead the sheriff was called. He came and took down the story, and drove up the road and turned in to their driveway. By the time he would have gotten the squad car door open a loud bang was heard. The dog attacked the deputy and was put down immediately. And that was that. The children could safely walk to school again. I am a little surprised that Dad didn't go up there, but he did the right thing by calling the law. I don't know what the deputy said to the dog owner, but no more dogs were procured.
