Neighbor is Not Happy With Me

When we bought this place the neighbor was the first one over! He and his wife brought us a dish for dinner, I invited him to join us and its been great ever since! I now rent his land.

I agree with the earlier, statement take the high road. Show him you are a better neighbor than he ever expected to get. My granddaddy once told me he never had a bad neighbor because he was a GOOD neighbor!

Where were you from in MD. We just bought a small (10 acres) in St. Mary's and have similar issues from one of the folks. I built the barn and he said it was a nice shed. I told him that my "shed" was 3 times the size of his house. He calls and complains that one of the barn cats is looking in his window and for me to pay more attention to it.

I just ignore him

One of my friends, back in Iowa, had a similiar situation. After about three years, it all "smoothed" over and they currently get along OK. Maybe the neighbor just needs time to adjust to his new reality/view.

I have heard this type stuff from many folks who think the pasture next to them will always be pasture, or woods, or gently rolling hills, or whatever. Like has been said several times before, if he wanted the land next him to stay just like it was, he should have made sure his name was on the deed. I wouldn't worry about him. But, please take the higher ground. If he starts ranting, just say "good day" and walk away. And make sure your property line is well known and marked. We literally had a killing close to me over a disputed property line. While a bad situation, the party in the right came out on top and with no charges.(ruled self defense)

And while my wife does understand why we built in the exact middle of our 55 acres she doesn't understand why I keep an eye out for land joining us going "on the market".

I think like shvl73 said, taking the high road, being polite and waving to him is a good idea. You'll get a lot of self satisfaction out of being a better person.
I 'd also name one of you donkeys after him and call it in for the night when he's out in his yard.

I think I would have said "gosh, I didn't consider that" and leave it at that. You have done nothing wrong. He just didn't want a neighbour. You can probably develop a "smile and wave" relationship. Perhaps he will do you both a favour and put up a privacy fence. If he does, don't be offended, compliment him on it. It makes life more pleasant.

Around here the definition of a good neighbor is the person that lives near you, minds their own business and never visits unless invited.

I'd get out my 30-06 or my 50BMG Barrett and start pounding the Earth backstop

That is what my neighbor did to show his displeasure with us building a house "in his backyard" - not considering my lot is 20 acres and his is 2/3 acre. He started with rifles, shotguns, etc, and escalated to a WWII machine gun last summer. Thank goodness ammunition is so expensive.

Our trials were described in: Rural Living Adaptation of a City Dweller

Makes you wonder sometimes about our upbringings.

All I can say is..... Welcome to the 'hood.

Some of these posts are quite disturbing.
