Neighbor Tractor Accident

I attended a tractor safety course here in Texas and they showed a number of accidents and described what happened. Some were because the tractor pulled over to let traffic go by. They pointed out that (here anyway) there is no requirement to pull over, AND you do not know the condition of the shoulder should you do so. There were several roll over accidents of $100k+ machines because the shoulder was soft and would not support the weight.

The law here says to pull over when its safe to pull over. However, lots of folks don't realize its not safe for the large machine to go onto the shoulder, and they get impatient.

Right. It used to be much of the driving public spent time in their youth on a farm and understood such things. Nowadays the majority of driving public have no such idea and want to get wherever the are going in as little time as possible. They should stay on the freeways and big cities in my opinion.

Well - I guess I'm right on the average. I'm certainly 65+ and I average around 5000 miles on each of my two vehicles. Hold it though - I have a third vehicle - 2017 BMW R1200GSA - I put 4300 miles on that bike this year. So I'm "over average or better than average" - ha,ha,ha.

I thought the numbers would be higher. I'm 66, 12K miles a year. Wife is 61, 24K miles a year.

Well I guess I'm in trouble again, in the over 65 range;
Truck is a 15 and has 46,000 on it so about 20,000a year on it.
Plow truck gets about 4-5000 a year.
Then my HD ulta limited but the last couple of years it's only been getting 5-6000 miles a year, used to be over 12,000 yr.

MARGARETVILLE, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is investigating an tractor accident that claimed the life of a Town of Middletown board member.

According to deputies, it happened before 8 a.m. Friday on Bill Stahl Road in Margaretville.

The sheriff's office says 42-year-old ------------- of Arkville was on a disabled farm tractor that was being towed by a landowner along a narrow, snow-covered driveway when a wheel of the tractor dropped off the driveway next to a steep embankment and overturned. Officials say ------ was fatally injured.

The tractor was not running at the time, according to deputies. Authorities say it was not equipped with tire chains or a rollover protection structure (R.O.P.S.).

Same thing in Virginia, now. But in both Indiana and Virginia (and I bet in most other jurisdictions as well), it is illegal to exceed the posted speed limit even when passing! So consider the irony. If you're driving the speed limit in the left lane and another driver comes up behind you going faster, you are breaking the law if you don't move over so he can continue to break the law. :confused2:

Just drove up to Boston and back... Good Lord, I thought I was gonna lose my mind. So many drivers camped out in the left lane, flash the lights and nothing. As to speeding, I do mostly 5 to 10 mph more than posted... I was the slow poke... Forget about driving in downtown Boston, not for the faint of heart...

Urban driving doesn't bother me. You expect the worst.

But out here, there is no excuse for the brain dead stupidity. You only see six cars on the paved two-lane as far as the eye can see, and from afar you'd think they were all chained together!

And on a snow covered road, that doesn't change. Sometimes it's just worse as maybe the first person is driving slower.

Not two thinking brain cells in the lot of them!
