Neighbors and their many running wild dogs

When another farmer's dog got in my Grandfather's Hen House... he called the farmer and the neighbor farmer came over and shot his own dog... saying once they go rogue nothing else can be done.

He told my Grandfather to count up his damages and he would make it good and he did.

This is my experience of farm country....

"What I did was to spend about $100 on a half decent airsoft assault rifle. It's electrically operated (rechargeable battery) and fires the little biodegradable 6mm pellets at around 300 rounds-per-minute."

Is it a fully auto?

Yes, full auto, and quite reliable as far as ammo feed goes despite the fact that the magazine is down below. One battery charge lasts months for my infrequent use, and even if the battery goes dead there is a spring loaded single-shot cocking mechanism to get you operating, albeit not in pew-pew-pew mode.

I was surprised and happy at how effective this has been for me. Apparently the dogs can see these pellets coming at very high speed and it terrorizes them much more so than even a near miss by a large caliber firearm. I hope your results are the same.

That's how it was where i grew up too. I would always try to contact the owner, if i knew who it was, and livestock wasn't in danger, but always understood if my dog was getting into trouble at somebody's place, that they were well within their right to put my dog down. Sometimes it's the difference of making a profit that year, as slim as it is.

By wild games I meant coyotes, raccoons, and possums.

Just tell me that the dogs have their rabies tags on their collars.

May be inflammatory, but any dog owner who doesn't have their dogs up to date on their rabies shots should own a dog.

Interesting thread

Many good solutions and ideas.

I am a simple man. I do not wish to hurt or torture any animal but will kill one that is a threat. And having kids or grandkids at risk ups the ante a lot.

Nothing wrong with talking to a neighbor about a problem and the potential solutions. It is important that the neighbor understand he has a problem. If he is unable or unwilling to solve it, others will do it.

I learned at someone else expense to not make any threats. A friend had a female dog and no fence. House dog that was let out to potty etc. A neighbor down the road had a very friendly little male dog that would come calling if the friends dog was in heat. My friend got angry and called the neighbor and threatened to shot her dog if it came back. About a month later her dog got out and could not be found. She called my friend crying and blaming him for killing her dog. She never did stop believing he killed her dog. I learned from then on no threats and no bragging. just deal with the problem.

well, I haven't seen these dogs in some time now. I guess the neighbor that caught them chasing his cows took care of them.

I rode by the trashy trailer where they liven today and saw no dogs at all.
It is my bet those dogs had never seen a vet,or had any type of shots.

Hopefully, they won't get any more dogs, but I bet they end up with more that will likely suffer the same fate as the others

I got a really good deal on my dog kennel a few years back. I was driving down a country road on the way home and saw two of them for sale in like-new condition, both priced for less than the cost of one new one. The owners said that they had gotten rid of their golden retriever because of the barking complaints. Also that "We moved here from Massachusetts because we didn't think that it mattered up here."

Sigarms is right, there have always been "trashy" folk as well as "respectable" folk. I've read a lot of accounts of country life and homesteading, going back a hundred years or more, and you see it there too. However, things have definitely changed. Most rural communities are literally disintegrating. The young folk--the ones that stay you wish they would leave, and the good ones get the heck away. Drugs, booze, and despair, and a large dose of I-don't-care.
