Maybe your dog is eating it..... (y)
That could be. One of our dogs would follow cats and cows. It's kinda gross to watch.

I heard they are after the salt. In my opinion, all that does is cause bad breath.

Hello all, we have a continuing problem with a neighbor two doors over letting their dogs run free, who have not been neutered. They come over and they defecate on our driveway on a regular basis. We’ve talked to them about it, and every time we see it, we tell him to come over and pick it up, which they do. However, one of these days, I’m going to step in it, and the local Bylaw says the dogs are not allowed to run free off their property.

Any ideas? We have spoken to the bylaw officer, and we will be sending an email saying, that the by law prohibits this type of activity, and that ā€œwe don’t want to have to pursue legal actionā€
Spray the driveway with white vinegar. I think walmarts sells it for something $3.30 a gallon.

Or locate and use one of these products.

Glad my Aussie isn't a licker, never has been and don't want a 'kiss' either. He cleans his own private area regularly, bad enough.

If your area has laws against roaming dogs, I assume there are penalties? Why not just tell your neighbors that while you appreciate that they come and clean up after their dogs, you are tired of having to ask and tired of dealing with it. Tell them that you might be willing to overlook the occasional "escape artist" if you see that they are making a serious effort at resolving the problem, not just cleaning up after it. If they won't take appropriate measures (install an an actual or an invisible fence or otherwise restrain their dogs), you will be reporting them for action by whatever authorities deal with this.

In our area the owner of a dog roaming at large gets a warning for the first offense. The next offense involves a fine and the fines escalate. The final remedy of not corrected is impounding the dog. It doesn't often escalate to the fine stage. Most of those with wandering dogs have taken steps to contain them (invisible fences being the most popular: inexpensive and easy to set up.) In our rural town, people tend to know who the owners are and just let them know: "Hey, I saw your dog down by the Smith farm."
Mind as well put up a sign saying "please stop your dog crapping on my driveway" as that will be just as effective. People who don't control their animals don't give a rats a$$ about rules, laws, or anyone else and will say FU mind your own business.

Then you see people letting dogs lick their face & mouth!
I have several neighbors who are lovey dovey with their dogs yet are happy to let their dogs roam freely. One dog in particular loves eating regular meals at our manure pile.

Unfortunately many of these dogs end up getting hit on the road by speeders and farm equipment. Then the owners buy another dog and let it run free. Go figure.

Just another reason I'm thankful I live in the country. If I were you, I'd shoot the cur, but then we don't have that issue out here. One no concrete driveway, it's gravel and two, loose dogs don't last long out here, they get eliminated.

I see you are in Canada, forget the shoot part.
I see posts like this and all I have to say is why harm a poor animal. man up and go to the owners house and have a "talk" with him.
That's how I handle things.

Had the same thing with a neighbor up the road. Their 5 year old maybe? child ended up in my yard playing with my dog. I didn't even know who the kid was.
Finally the father comes in the yard and starts screaming at the kid and spanking him.

I said that's enough of that. I went up to him and told him if he was a competent parent he would have noticed his kid leaving the yard and if he didn't straighten up I'd blacken both his eyes. Don't flip out on your kid because you're a loser.

Been there. Farm dogs vs pets. Ours would lap up the juicy cow pies, roll in dead animals, the smellier the better, go down to the marsh and get into fights with raccoons and come back with their lips in shreds, chase cars till run over in the driveway by the neighbors pickup who had stopped in to talk. That would be the same neighbor who's dogs would come over and growl at us kids and kill our chickens (we had 1000s of chickens). Another neighbor kept a couple of junkyard dogs. Same thing, ride fast on our bikes or risk getting bit. I was mauled once by those things at around 7yrs old, funny how vivid that memory is to this day. I talked to him a month ago, and he reminisced about having to walk to school down our farm lanes, across farm fields to the 1room school a mile away, and how he would need to make sure to avoid the mean dogs at yet another neighbor. It's a little different now, at least around "here". I go down to SC to visit relatives, and that mentality is still going on. Keep the kids in, the "scary dogs" are in the yard. The kids have it in their head to run for the house, apparently they've had a miserable experience somewhere along the line. I have "pets" now. Hurting them would bring about thoughts of crimes of passion that wouldn't have been thought of then.

Update from OP. After several emails, they are just not getting it. So, we have contacted the local By-Law officer at the township office. We will keep you all posted.

And thanks for the great suggestions. In particular we are going to spread some vinegar and maybe some cayenne pepper at the edge of our property. Our dog never goes out unless it is on our enclosed deck or on a leash, So we don’t need to worry about him encountering whatever we put down between our properties to discourage the neighbor dogs. Will keep you all posted on how it turns out.

I'm still confused why a dog would crap on gravel. What a terrible place to leave yer doo doo. My dog (lab/pit mix) seeks out clumps of grass or woodchips and then does the instinctual hind leg "bury it" move which accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Same here, except they tend to change their tune when that fine of $50 for the 2nd offense grows to $200 for the fourth offense.

I am in the country, and my driveway is gravel. And no, I’m not going to shoot the dogs. (There are actually two of them - Golden Retrievers.)
You live in the country and have a gravel driveway, I am assuming you have snakes and hopefully are aware of where you are placing your feet. If it is wiggling or looks like a turd then sidestep it. Next hard rain both will be gone.

So long as the 'neighbor' don't come over and put a pile in your driveway, all is good.

Years ago we had a neighbor who lived across the street and one house down. Her dog would crap on our lawn and my wife or I would have to clean it up. My feeling was to kick the dog but it really wasn't the dog's fault because it didn't know better, so I didn't. My wife and I both spoke with the dog's owner several times with little effect. So then my wife started collecting the crap, putting it in a plastic bag. She then hung the bag of crap from the side mirror of the neighbor's car. After doing this a couple of times the neighbor got the message: she was going to have to deal with her dog's crap even if the dog was going somewhere else. And we no longer had dog crap on our lawn.
