Animal control in farm country?

As the OP is in Ontario, and if he is a farmer, he is allowed by law to destroy nuisance animals causing or about to cause damage on the farm property. That's the animal control.

We also have leash laws. The dog owner is responsible for their animals and their animals shouldn't be allowed to roam free and unsupervised.

Had a neighbors 3 dogs come on to our property multiple times that would scare my cats. I called the neighbor multiple times and even brought the dogs back to their house.
After that a few well placed BB's has kept them away for a few years.

My brother swears by cayenne pepper. Says it gives them a "ring of fire", and there nose will pick it up.

You should have to tell the neighbors again and again,third time I would very stern mention law enforcement will be notified.

If this is occurring at a time when you are up and about just get water hose and nozzle ready, a blast of cold water will work almost as good as a BB gun with less animosity, or has been mentioned a motion sensor sprinkler.

Call animal control and have them trap or catch the dogs on your property?

That was the solution around here. If the owner cares they'll pay to get it out of the shelter, pay to have it vaccinated and licensed, pay to keep it contained next time, and later pay attention so it doesnt happen again. Or the animals go away. We have responsible neighbors now. It took a while to get rid of the don't care doesn't matter attitude, but at least everyone now has their integrety intact, rather than being the dumf of the community like 25yrs ago.

Locked in the shed and hauled the pound is my animal control now. 50yrs ago my dog would come home repeatedly with buckshot in his rear. We didn't seem to care. It was very rural, hundreds of cows barn cats, dogs, varmints, all running around, too much to do, none were considered pets. We would step in crap with bare feet and go wash off in the cow tank. Now, we're considered a "rural hamlet" according to county zoning. There are now 17 neighbors within earshot if you yelled loud enough. People grudgingly now need to get along. If it was like years ago, then buckshot may still be the answer.

BB guns are potentially lethal to dogs. I don't know if it was the wrong spot or too close of a shot, but a friend of mine's dog died at the vet after being shot with a BB gun by someone in his neighborhood. It was shot between the front legs.

Some BB guns shoot pretty darned hard, too.

You have to use the cheapest one that cocks. The ones you see the bb come out the barrel. The cocking bb pistols are better, easier to carry than a long gun. I am not a dog shooter. But, I've been shot with those guns and I have shot others with those guns. Never punctured the skin. Do not use an air gun. Do not use a break over single cock. I'm talking Red Rider type guns.
