Forgot to mention, I read somewhere that brush cutting is one of the most dangerous tractor jobs an operator can do. Mostly due to turn overs I assume.

Probably from mowing with the bucket at full height, like so many I see.

Just want to post this as a reminder to everyone to be safe while operating.

My 84yr old neighbor was bushhogging with his MH 50 when he got off the tractor to move a rock and the tractor rolled and ran over him. Thankfully he had shut down the mower! He is out of surgury with two broken legs, one thigh high the other broke below the knee. He has been around tractors his entire life. Wishing him a speed recovery.

It happens. My 89 year old neighbor operates his JD 2640 at least once a week. When he was 83, he was standing on the rear wheel of his old Allis Chalmers wheel loader to jumper the starter solenoid. Forgot to place it in neutral. Engine started, loader began to move forward, he was tossed off the wheel hitting his gut on the way down. Lucky the loader didn't squash him. He spent a few weeks in the hospital until the internal bleeding stopped.

15-24 yr olds spend more hours in the seat than 84yr olds.

I don't know, some 84 year olds drive awful slow and spend a lot of time in the seat. Add the time sitting at an intersection with a green light, weaving in and out of the correct lane, missing turns, etc... This all adds up.

Seriously, I feel safer with an 84 year old behind me than a 20 year old on an iPhone.

Oh yeah, 84 year olds can't read an iPhone when they drive, so they are automatically safer drivers.

It does sound like the OP's neighbor's accident may have just been that-an accident. Reminds me to be more careful getting on and off the tractor. But since other's have referred to older citizen's driving skills (or lack thereof), let me relate my recent experience.

Yesterday I renewed my driver's license, and what I saw was downright scary. Two elderly ladies ahead of me particularly stood out-one obviously had vision problems, and couldn't pass the vision test. But the other was even worse in my mind-this lady had to use a walker and could barely move, had trouble following directions from the examiner, had very obvious slow reaction and physical skills, yet passed the vision test so got her license renewed.

We had to take my Mother's car keys last winter, and while she didn't like it, she is slowly adjusting. My MIL is several years older, yet has very goods driving skills. So it really just depends on the individual.

Based on what I saw yesterday, I'd support a proficiency test for renewing your driver's license, at least after age 65. Butthat would probably just mean more old guys on the road with tractors!

Update... I talked to his wife and he is doing as well as can be expected. He is still in the hosp in a rehab unit and will be for a few more weeks. I havent spoken to him but I know he is a very careful man, I dont have the details yet. Just a reminder to everyone to be careful out there operating our equipment.

I dont think he was careless and unable to use his tractor it was probable an accident. He is careful of what he does, passes on things he used to do, sold his boat and gave up fishing on Lake Erie 10 yrs ago because he felt it wasnt safe.
