Not sure that 84 year olds belong on a tractor.

Now that sounds a wee bit AGEIST!

Feller forgot to either set the brake, or block the wheel. I've seen mature adults make the same mistake all the time.

I intend to be hopping on and off tractors well past 100. And long after most of my contemporaries are taking permanent dirt naps.

Good for you, we should all. I am no where near 84 but as I get older I get more careful and my mistakes are less severe. Just the other day I jumped off one of my tractors and bumped it into reverse on the way off. With a cool head I stopped it. Things happen. There was a time when I would have panicked.

I can't agree with that. We don't know this individual. So maybe he shouldn't drive either??? So maybe we should just eliminate or lock up those in that age category. :)

I'm almost 62. I have every intention of operating my tractor at 84 and driving myself to town. My Uncle is 93 and he still does.

I'd not trust any braking system to hold a tractor that's otherwise in neutral on a hill above where I needed to do something, even on my brand new tractor. Either put it in the lowest gear it has and turn it off with the parking brake set, or turn the tractor at an angle if it rolls it's not going to cause any injuries if it gets free and rolls. I'd much rather be standing at the top of the hill cussing as my tractor made it's way to the river or down some in some big hole or canyon than be battered, mangled, and laying in the field not caring where the tractor goes.

I hope the fella makes a full and speedy recovery.

Very well stated. I often get off my tractor with it running and sometimes without setting the park brake. But I never do work in front of or behind the tractor. If I park on a steep grade and have to go behind the tractor to hook a chain or whatever I dig the loader bucket in the ground and always cramp the front tires so I got a chance of it missing me if it rolls away.

My tractor does not have a mechanical lock on the brake pedals. It uses a hydraulic brake system which could make such a lock ineffective. So instead, it has a park brake built into the transmission. I'm sure I don't want to know how small and dainty that park pin is......

Forgot to mention, I read somewhere that brush cutting is one of the most dangerous tractor jobs an operator can do. Mostly due to turn overs I assume.

If I am not spry, I don't want to be around. I fear "just existing", instead of living.

As always Farmgirl, you're words are both wise & kind. I truly appreciate & look forwards to your input!!
