Kan1ck,

Yes we all have to put up with stuff. We feel for you, brother.

"Yes, Honey, I can go along with keeping the pool if that is what you want for yourself and your mother, even though I would rather not have and maintain a pool, but I would like you to go along with me in getting a tractor now even though you would rather I did not. We are not getting any younger and a tractor would make the chores easier and besides I really want one before I'm too old to climb onto it."

Then give her your best grin.

Even if you forego the backhoe and get a subcompact with loader and mower. You can always try for the backhoe attachment later... you never know, you may have to bury the neighbors dog.

I don't suppose we are allowed to use profanities on this form, so I'll just cuss here in private.
SWMBO has now decided that she would in fact like to keep the pool. She has talked to many of her friends and I guess a lot of them have convinced her that the pool needs to remain a pool. She also now says she thinks it would help her mom's arthritis. I call that a strategic ploy on her part to hold her mom up like a human shield now that she has changed her mind.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
And she says that we can mow with the tractor that is currently used to mow her mom's lawn. Wife does most of the mowing at her mom's with it. I have done all the maintenance on that tractor (a 2004 Troy-Bilt Horse with 23 HP Kohler/50" deck) so I know it is up to the task. But, but, bu bu, it don't have a backhoe!
She says that we can look for a TBL Mower later. Oh yeah, later! Like I can see myself getting it when I'm 80 years old.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
At this point I am feeling like a deer in the headlights, but I guess I can live with a !#@Y%^%Y#@$#%)*&^^$%#$@ swimming pool if I have to!!!!!!!
I think I'll start telling her how nice that cane break looks and that I think we should keep it just like it is.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
I guess I'm gonna have to learn pool maintenance. What about going to salt water versus old school chlorinated systems?
Does anybody else have to put up with this crap?:confused2::(

I would tell her that a new hot tub would be far more therapeutic for the arthritis and need to put it where the pool used to be -so still need to get a tractor with hoe...

Hot Tub is more therapeutic. And easier to maintain, and maybe even less energy consumption. But logic isn't the issue.

Robert A. Heinlein said "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea."

I know this is supposed to be about you getting a nice tractor with a backhoe but since you asked about the pool I'd like to help you out with my two cents. The salt water pool is a relatively simple but different type of system because you dump a few bags of purified salt into the water and the system generates its own chlorine so you don't have to keep buying and adding liquid chlorine during the year. This does not mean you don't have to pay attention to what the water's doing, it just means there's a built-in system that pulls the chlorine out of the salt water (for all you chemists out there, I won't pretend I'm an expert or anything - just trying to help this poor fellow tractor lover out). I grew up with a chlorine pool and now I've had a salt pool as an adult. It cost a few bucks for the control module, which I had to mount on a pole, and there's the element that goes bad every five years or so, but after talking to friends with salt systems we went that way and haven't regretted it. I have small kids and a wife who love to swim all summer. It keeps them all happy. I'm not a big swimmer but I'll get in when I start to melt, and being from the northeast I start to melt around 80 degrees. That being said, I get why most people don't want to bother with a pool, especially if their kids are grown and don't care about getting in a pool anymore. I wish you luck with the tractor debate. I think a good compromise would be for you to get a nice tractor in exchange for fixing up that pool.

Yeah, we will be putting a bid on the house Thursday. I hope they will accept, but even if we have to haggle a bit, we are hoping for the best.
Oh yeah, the house has a whirlpool spa bath tub in the large bathroom. It just holds one person at a time........unless you and the other person are very comfortable being really close.:D
I don't want her to hear about a hot tub, she might want one. And I would have to tell her we don't need one.

You have your own attorney/real estate broker or agent who isn't the listing agent/broker/seller, to write the purchase agreement, right?

Not all states allow dual agency, but where dual agency is legal, it is a bad idea.

Just checking. Good luck! :)

BTW, my view is that if a seller doesn't say no to your first offer, you've offered too much. :D

Good luck,

I know the feeling, my wife said no for years.....last weekend she said I should have let you have this thing 10years ago. I am not sure that is a victory but I will take what I can get.

I don't remember the size of your property....or where your mother in law lives, but do you really want to haul that mower back and fourth twice a week.....that is as often as I have to mow....seems this year it rains every day.

I am reminded of the cartoon where the guy is selling his motorcycle and tells the prospective buyer, "Apparently "DO WHATEVER YOU WANT" means something different to women than men. So yes, we all have to put up with some idiocy from the wife from time to time and the old adage about women changing their minds is quite applicable to daily life. I think the only reason women sleep is so they can dream up something different for each new day. I don't know how single women ever make a decision since each day is a new decision.

No dual agency stuff going on with this deal. My wife's brother is a real estate agent and we all get along well with each other, and he does not work for the agency the homeowner is listed with.
The opening offer is below what the house is advertised at, considerably lower in fact. That was my reason for the "haggle" term I mentioned.

The property we are looking at is a 1 acre lot.
Will not be hauling any mowers around once we get settled in and sell both properties where we and my MIL currently live.
The plan is to have me and my wife, and wife's mother all living in the new (to us) house because of health issues regarding my MIL.
I may have to haul a simple mower around to maintain the lawns of the 2 "selling" houses until they actually do sell after (if) we get moved into the new digs. Might not should have called it "digs" because it now looks like the digs part is on stand by.
