What a torrid job I had trying to undo the oil filter on my Kia Sportage, i eventually got it by driving a screwdriver through it, but even then it was so confined i took the skin of my knuckles and I think the neighbour probably heard a few expletives. For next time are there any tricks

Was this your Kia's first oil change?
If so, then next time will probably be much easier. It is not too uncommon for the first time to be a bear since the filters are usually put on dry and tight. Now that it has a bit of oil on the gasket and it wasn't over torqed it will come off much easier next time around.

Well, you don't say what tool or technique you were using to begin with, or who istalled the filter, but if I can't get one off with a strap wrench I use one of those big sockets that fit the different filter sizes, and they work quite well. The other solution would be to trade the Kia!

You can use the Jiffy Lube technique they use in our neighborhood: Overtighten the filter, leave the drain plug loose, forget the oil till it's run out the bay and tech notices the light on and screams "Shut it off!, shut it off!!...",
fill the brake resevoir with steering fluid, put anti freeze in the wiper jug, add generic auto trans fluid to your expensive fluid brand specific tranny....all for only 29.99 plus haz waste fee. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I didn't know Jiffy Lube was so much fun! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I've seen that kind of monkey wrench behavoir so many times that I try do do every bit of work myself that I possibly can. At least that way I know that:
1) chunks of dirt didn't fall into my crankcase
2) not everything is cross-threaded
3) the right kinds and amounts of clean new fluids went into the right holes
4) I don't give myself blank looks and lies (too often) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
