Don't forget the Automatic added 1k back in the 70's and today $8k to the sales price of most fullsize Pickups! So yeah, They want to sell Auto's!
Is it an add on today? It’s standard equipment and the manual is an optional item that is special order (when available).

I have a truck with a manual, have one with roll up windows too, ain't NO way I'm buying another truck optioned that way! Don't want one without AC either!

I also don't need a truck loaded up with all the options either, so my Silverado isn't loaded and isn't stripped, but I sure like it! I can load a tractor up and pull it down the road with decent fuel milage and empty it's milage is MUCH better than the older trucks I've owned, and it has a lot more power than they had too!

I bought my first new pu in 1972 and the Silverado I'm driving today is so far the best pu I've ever owned.

But, one benefit is that the people working there are making a decent living and not interested in crossing their northern border to look for work. And better to buy from Mexico than China.
That is a very good point and I have said in many places, many times that we should have made a point to help Mexico develop and prosper and protect itself from the drug cartels. We would have been doing ourselves a huge favor.

I also think if we had started trading with Cuba back in the early 1970's the communist regime would have been overthrown within 2 years.

...the cost of transporting it to Somewhere, USA aren't insignificant... not to mention you're going to pay that 25% import duty regardless of if it's registered for road use.
Import duty is real. It's a little frustrating how our current POTUS criticized the prior for imposing them, promising to cancel them if elected, but then what... decided he likes keeping them, after all?

But I think you'd be surprised how cheap it is to ship vehicles en masse. I looked at shipping just a single car from Germany to USA many years ago, and even with just a single car it was surprisingly cheap. Do the a few thousand at a time, and you have massive economy of scale, by comparison.

More vehicles we have are manual than automatic.
For many years, I used to joke that all of our tractors were automatic (hydro), but all of our on-road vehicles were manual.

True. Today it is factored in as standard. The last time Ford offered a manual in the Superduty trucks, The Auto was about 8K as an option.

I still prefer MT for cars and trucks, tho being caught in stop-and-go traffic makes an AT a clear winner. AT better for slow work moving heavy trailers around, too. I guess I prefer manuals cuz I am more involved with the driving process,

And I am a long time convert to HST on tractors, from shuttle-shifting crash boxes. I can understand some tractor owners prefer gear trannies for the work they do. But for forward-reverse work of using a loader or a backhoe attachment, HST is the clear winner.

Back to the OP's extra small Toyota pickups. Conventional ATs with torque-converters will usually be heavier and more expensive than manuals. That, plus their non-US market will still result in more manuals than ATs, I suspect. Those who have purchased Toyota's or Suzuki's micro pickups already see that.

Note that serious industrial UTVs (side-by-sides) still come with predominately or exclusively manual trannies. I mean the JD Pro Gator, and similar products from Toro and Jacobson.

It still adds to the cost whether it's optional or included in the base price.

I looked at this a few years ago. It would be perfect for me to use around my property. With only 700 lb payload though, I opted for a small dump trailer instead.
