In Mexico, they run their vehicles until the wheels fall off.
I know some Mexicans who have very nice and expensive cars which were bought new in the US. Those cars never go into Mexico. They are garaged at second homes in the US. Many of those on the northside of San Antonio.

Actually driving a car with a stick really hinders your ability to play with your phone and fully enjoy all your optional upgrades you spent thousands of dollars at the dealership on and cripes is it hard to text and drive a 5 speed in traffic.

Oh yes, there’s lots of Mexican citizens who are well off and buy nice vehicles, but like all people of means, they trade them in and buy new and their vehicles are resold in Mexico. And of course there are many with second homes or foreign students who have vehicles in the US.

Many of the insurance company totaled vehicles in the US get imported to MX, fixed and are driven daily there.

We did a study with one of the largest US auto insurers and over 10% of their totaled vehicles in Texas were going to MX.

That’s not surprising. Lots of people there are seeking cheap transportation.

Yep then quite often very nice vehicles, often F350's and other 3/4, 1 tons and some luxury vehicles - Caddy Denali's are popular - get stolen while in MX or stolen north of the border and taken south and when recovered and repatriated to the insurer in the states the vehicle has been "up-armored" shall we say to the point it has no real value as a vehicle in the US. Some are shot full of holes. The insurer cannot afford to sell it in that condition for liability reasons. I frequently had calls from insurance companies asking if they should pay $xx to bring back a vehicle that was recovered and they had paid out high $$'s for. My first question was 'What do you know FOR SURE about the condition of it." It's real interesting dealing with salvage south of the border.

I bet. I’ve traveled to Mexico several times, but never dealt with the criminal element there. But chop shops in the US are selling parts in Mexico to dispose of stolen vehicles, or just taking stolen vehicles to Mexico where they disappear.

I suspect a truck sold for the equivalent of $10k in Thailand would cost a bit more than $10k equivalent in Mexico, and then the cost of transporting it to Somewhere, USA aren't insignificant... not to mention you're going to pay that 25% import duty regardless of if it's registered for road use.

By the time you add all that up, you'll likely decide to get a 20-year-old pickup truck instead... or a 2007 IH 7500 4x4 or something similar ;)

30 years ago manufacturers were saying that only 10% of new truck buyers wanted a manual transmission. I've always suspected that was their way of saying "We don't want to make them so if they aren't on the lot people will "want" what's available.
Don't forget the Automatic added 1k back in the 70's and today $8k to the sales price of most fullsize Pickups! So yeah, They want to sell Auto's!
