OK, again, please do not take this thread into a flame war.

The purpose of this posting is to provide a heads up for persons who may be considering a purchase of a truck, who are partial to Toyota and under no immediate pressure to pull the trigger and go buy something.
Toyota is I believe building a new plant near San Antonio to build their new trucks. These new trucks will be available in 2006 model year. My research, digging, ear pulling and arm twisting yields these results which I cannot say are totally accurate but are again--a heads up and nothing more. If YOU are buying a Chevy, GMC, Ford, this thread is not for you. If you want a Titan or like the current Tundra or Tacoma this thread is not for you.
OK, what I have learned is that the new Toyotas will be much larger. They will have a more squared, creased "look" and they will be more macho, butch looking. The Tacoma is getting bigger, almost as big as the current Tundra and will have a top engine of 4.7 litre from the current Tundra. There may also be a small diesel efficiency engine but maybe not in 2006. The Tundra is going to square off against the Titan and will be a FULLSIZE truck, no longer a 9/10ths truck. It will have a larger engine than now of at least 5.4 litres and there may as well be a diesel coming. This diesel will not be meant to compete with the likes of Cummings/Tritons but instead will offer an efficiency alternative to the gasoline engine--initially and again maybe not availabe the first year of release. There is going to be a 3/4 ton unit as well, that is very, very likely a fact. Toyota is currently showing several concepts around and I have seen the pics of the latest full size concept. Concepts are just that--concepts---they always change. BUT, it is big, squared up, massive chrome grill, hulking H2 like fender flares--all in all very "TONKA" looking. The drift I get is that it will have massive power as well in the top of the line units with tow capacity beyond 10,000 lbs in the 1/2 ton. There will be TRD versions and performance versions and just as now these may rely more on the TRD dealer installed performance options to a base TRD packages rather than from their factory. However, the new plant that is being built I understand will have the capacity to spec units to a customer order much like Ford and GM currently do but we will have to wait and see.
I give this heads up because trucks are big purchases and many people like me can wait as there is nothing wrong with my current truck or possibly your current truck. I was getting close to buying the Titan, a great machine, but now think I will wait to see if this information I have is correct.
Again, if you are buying some other truck or like the current Tundra then by all means go ahead as what Toyota will have in 2006 should have no impact on that decision.
TRD currently offers superchargers, lockers, suspension components, limited slip differentials, appearence packages, exhaust systems, air filter systems, wheels etc. There are also dealer/factory installed tow packages for the current Tundra that many people do not know exist. These type things will continue to be avialabe for the 2006 and beyond Toyotas.
What Toyota says. They intend to be the number 1 vehicle producer. They have surpased Ford for the number 2 spot now in auto sales and the remaining hurdle is competing in the lucrative full size truck market. That is a paraphrase of what they say.
If this is helpful fine, if it threatens your manhood /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif fine, if it has no effect on your life that is fine as well but for those planning a truck in the next few years to pull their tractors around they may want to wait and see what shakes out. By the way, I also undestand GM has some replacements under developement for their current full size units and the styling is along the lines of the new S10 replacements like the Colorado mid size truck, these may show up as 2005/2006. There maybe a Hummer midsize and fullsize as well but my crystal ball is beginning to fade as is my interest in the General. J

When I saw the word "Toyota" in the subject heading, I quickly looked to the poster name and, yep, I was right, TresCrows /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Efficiency diesel, hey. I hope those become a reality in the next 4-5 years, when I'll be replacing my current truck. An extra 5k is a lot of upfront money for a diesel, and I really don't need a 3/4 ton truck. A smaller diesel powerplant in a half ton probably won't have as high a tariff, I'd hope.

As far as the full-size truck market goes. The more competition the better. I'll may never buy a Toyota truck, but if the result is better domestic trucks, it's all good.

Hey TresCrows, Thanks for the post. I will be looking to buy a truck when I graduate college which looks like it will be right around that time. I will definately be keeping my eye on toyota based on what you said. Please post any more good stuff you might find out about this.

I guess there are some guys on the forum that don't dig toyota much, judging by your post. I found this pick on the USA6X6 webpage, this looks like a good way to boost a toyota's towing capacity. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi Biodiesel. Thanks for the pic. Yep, that would be a squeeze in my garage.
I do hope that Toyota does offer an efficient diesel /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif. That is what I undestand is being seriously considered. There may also be a hybrid type Tacoma. I would not likely be interested in that but they may serve a need as things like delivery, mail, buisness and government use. I think the diesels may not come until 2007, the second year for the new lineup. Clearly Toyota is still working several concepts but we should over the next year really begin to learn more. I think a few things are clear, while Toyota does consider Ford and GM their long term competitors Nissan has been a long rival of Toyota, one that Toyota probably felt a few years ago had been vanquished to history /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Well, now, by whatever miracle, Nissan is suddenly the "comeback kid" on a roll /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. The Titan was no secret but I think it's overall quality and performance and VALUE probably blindsided GM, Ford and Toyota as well. It is one thing to to slowly peck away at the market but to loose ground to Nissan is not something Toyota is likely to take sitting down /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. I am pretty darn sure the next Toyota truck will be at least a match for the Titan and if so I want one /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif. I am expecting a slugfest come 2006/7 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.
As to all the non-Toyota types for whom this thread was not intended, drive what you like, I do. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Chebies and Fords do look good in my rearview /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. That new F150 is awfully purty too /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. J

Years and years ago there was an uncle. He was always racing away from a streetlight or stop sign and then ranting about how he'd blown the skirt up on that other vehicle.

Bless him. I doubt one could count the smiles he gave us about his racing victories over folks that never even knew there was a contest. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is very interesting.
It will be about 10 years before I could buy one(should be lots of used ones on the market by then /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
I have often wondered if they would ever make big pickups.
Should be a nice truck.
Thanks for the post.

How does this compare to thier pickups built for other markets? For instance, Australia has had crew cab mini's for years, but everyone here thought it was some huge breakthrough in pickup engineering.

And, with new development, will they really push the economy envelope? I have this terrible soapbox rant that if these manufactures are making these new engines, how come they still have poor fuel mileage? Is that really all they can get out of them even with all the technological advances that have been made?

To answer RobertN's question. Toyota currently offers the Australian version of the tacoma, the Hilux, with a diesel engine. They have a 3.0 litre Diesel that is available in either a turbo or naturally aspirated version. I'm very excited to hear that toyota is planning on making diesel engines available in america. One big difference I noticed about the australian trucks was the styling. I'm not sure where they get them from, but the new australian version looks like an older style american version. Maybe the early 90's.

I think manufacturers are going towards more efficient engines. The new 5 cylinder GM engine is pretty cool. I like the idea of using less polluting fuels in the big engines we currently have. Like biodiesel or E-85. In fact, GM offers an option to have an E-85 ready engine in your Silverado if you want it. The problem with these fuels is that you either have to find someone who offers them or make them yourself. While making them yourself is not hard it takes time, that most people do not want to spend. And if you are in an area of the country that has these fuels available at the pump they are usually pretty pricey.
