New 4520r smell drives me nuts

Jim, no light on yet. The smell started since day one.
Also, I try to run it with the tach in the green zone most of the time.
You're right about the smell (burnt plastic)
It only has 24 hrs on it.

I have right at 200hrs on mine and it's just starting to "sound" right. That "rattle", when new, when you upped the revs in the 2000rpm range has disappeared on mine. As to the smell, I had the same "issue". I keep my tractor in the shop and when I'd fire it up first thing the acrid smell was atrocious, burn my sinuses bad. After "modding" my soot cooker THAT smell has gone away. BUT, if you do that then you'll get more diesel smell when you start it. It's just the nature of the beast. Diesel exhaust smells like, well, diesel, unleaded fuel exhaust still smells like rotten eggs to me. I'll take my diesel rigs thank you.

I don't mind the diesel smell my other machines give off either, its that burnt plastic smell the soot cooker throws out that's nasty.

Have you done a close inspection and make sure some plastic part isn't too close to the exhaust manifold?

Yes I have, its the exhaust.

I am surprised that your tractors exhaust smells so bad when all that it has is the DPF, I was blaming the terrible nose and eye burning on my pickup from the DEF and your tractor doesn't have that fluid.
I'm glad I don't have the particulate filter or DEF injection on my tractors.
I often have them idling as I am hooking up or dropping an implement and the exhaust fumes aren't too bad but I know that I can't stand to be in back of my pickup when it's idling it'll bring tears to my eyes and make breathing hard.

I have never noticed any foul or unusual odors when I run my 4720. Mine too is far less odorous than my diesel pick-up or any other tractor I have ever owned. Wonder if it is something specific with Ernie's tractor. Perhaps the paint on the exhaust system is the problem?

Paint should burn off (or at least stop smelling) pretty quick.
My 3725 did not smell at all when new. Recently I idled it a lot while unloading a backhoe and attaching it and the exhaust started smelling some. I ran it at 2000 to use the backhoe and most of the smell went away.

I don't know, but I still suspect that it is fuel related. I can tell a big difference between my winter fuel with additive and my summer fuel. Both are red dye, and bought from the same service, but man, that winter red stinks. Then adding the Power Service on top of it, and the fuel *really* stinks in the exhaust.

Maybe try a fuel located from a different source and blend?
