I finally got a picture of my 5203. I took it inside the barn because of the rain so the angle is not great. But reading on here for several months helped me make the decision that I did. Thanks to all.

Congrats on the purchase, that's a sweet looking machine! I wish I had a need for something that big. As it is, my little 2305 is too big for the yard. But so what? :)

Am I green or what? I have the 5203 with 2 WD and 512 loader. Your machine has got to be the perfect critter in my view. Congrats a plenty! You will certainly enjoy that tractor. Please follow up with some posts after you put it to work...I know there is probably some of us who might be tempted to upgrade to the new '03 series from our 2WD models.

Well, I've got it plenty dirty since it was delivered. I still don't have any water here as yet so I have not been able to wash it.:( I had some dozer work done before I received the tractor, now I am trying to pull the trees and junk out of the mud and muck to burn. I had already tried to burn the pile but the fire didn't do a good enough job.

I forgot to add that it is a awesome tractor. No frills but it does everything that I asked it to. Except that I have found that I am needing to have the tires filled or get some weights for better traction.

Great looking tractor. You'll find that it's a "mowing machine."

What do you think of the loader? I was a little unimpressed with my 512 loader on my old 5103.

This is the first loader that I have owned so I don't know how to compare, but I have been able to dig a bucket full without any problems. My problem is that I try to dig too deep. I need to learn to operate better. I also picked up a 2596 LandPride Disk/Harrow out of a trailer and moved it where I wanted it. I don't know what it weighed but it is heavy.:D

Greggh.... You have my dream tractor. Beautiful.

Is it my imagination or is the JD green darker this year than in past?

Please keep us posted on the new transmission.

Driving my friends 5103 this last sunday I noticed some rust on the top surface of his wheel fenders, especially the right fender. Thinking a little, we both realized that the rust was exactly where a driver rests his forearms. It seems the salt from sweat is eating right through the paint. We figure the rust is more apparant on the right fender because he steers more with the left hand and rests his right arm more.

Might pay to wipe down that spot after hot days on the tractor.

It may be an optical illusion, the green engine and drivetrain doesn't give the contrast of the black formerly used. My old '75 1530 Deere looks darker than the new tractors.

The picture was taken inside the barn so the light is not as bright. It is a brighter green when in the sunlight.:)

The transmission seems to work great, except for the operator who forgets that he can shift in reverse without the clutch when using the loader. I am still to old fashioned not to use the clutch I guess. I can't get my mind around it.:D

I was looking at a 5103 the other day and had a hard time getting my mind around that too:confused: I get shuttle shift, but this 9x3 is much more like a collar shift, so it just seems like it should work like a collar shift.

I can't get my mind around shifting that transmission without the clutch either. My understanding was that the shift between a forward gear (2nd on the main transmission, I believe) and reverse was synchronized and could be done while the tractor was moving....but that you DID need the clutch.

I'd keep using the clutch if there's any doubt.
