I hear what your saying six...thought he was being somewhat sacarastic...

I am quite sure they are as strong as any ag tire...possibly better in that you don't have such large voids between the bar that expose more of the thinner part of the tire to puncture. There is more thicker tread cover more of the running surface....if you know what I mean.

Cool deal. What did you do with your old tires?

Since tractor was brand new and so were R1's that came on it...tire dealer took them in trade so actual cost to upgrade wasn't as costly.

Hey, those tires look pretty nice. I have a set of loaded R1's and a set of R4's for my 5425. I've been doing some heavy dirt work lately so I have the R1's on mine. Recently I crushed a front rim one morning when it was below zero out when I crossed one of my own frozen tire ruts with a full load in the 1 yard bucket I have on the tractor. Man, did that ever suck! It was just wonderful taking the wheel off out in the middle of nowhere, dismounting the tire, beating the wheel back into shape with a brass hammer and brass bar, cleaning the bead, re-mounting the tire and re-seating the tire. That flat sucked!

That taught me that, even aired up to the maximum pressure, the R1's won't take the weight and punishment that the R4's will. However, once everything froze over I didn't feel like changing to my other set of wheels and tires in that cold. It would have really been nice to have had a set of tires that would have pulled in the mud (before the big freeze) but would have been stronger to handle a heavy load. I wish you'd have posted this a little over a year ago when I bought a second set of wheels and R4's! How wide are the rears? With the R4's I did go with a 24" wide rear that helps "float" some over soft areas.

sorry to hear of your troubles...

I had a similar issue with my last utility tractor. I had a TN-75 and had a set of R1's 18 & 28's and then a set of mowing tires mounted on different rims 12 & 24's. Both were loaded but niether worked exactly as I wanted. The R1's pulled good in fields etc. but were to harsh too mow with and stunk on pavement for plowing snow etc. Plus they had very little flotation as they were fairly narrow particularlly the fronts. The R3's were a diamond pattern...good for mowing and decent on pavement. They had OK flotation but no decent grip and no self cleaning ability...plus they were significantly smaller than the Ag's which significantly reduced my ground clearance and made the tractor look rather wimpy.

I committed that when I bought a new large tractor I would find a tire that would have the attributes I need in tread pattern, weight capacity and size. These Nokians hit it on all counts. That is why I am sharing with the group my very proud find. Both tractor dealer and tire dealer had no solutions for me...I had to do the research find the brand and the model and even then they were skeptical. So far I am extremely pleased and the dealer and staff were equally impressed.

Glad you like them...sorry for your troubles....maybe next time around...they are pricey but worth it. Definitely by only having one set of rims and no change overs.

Cheers

I don't think any one tire does everything well. Your tires look great and fit your purpose well, but one trip into serious mud and they'll show their shortcomings.

Nothing can handle deep dirt or mud like R1 ags
Nothing can handle heavy FEL weight and on/off road work and wear like R4 utilities
Nothing can be gentle on lawns, fields or pavement like turfs

If there really was a swiss army knife tire, IMO, it would be R-4's.

I like those tires you have, but they look like they'll clog up with mud far quicker than the bars on R-4's.

First let me say...I agree...there is no one tire that is perfect or that's all they would make.

What I did say was this is as close to perfect for my usage as I could find. Biggest issue being good traction in a variety of conditions and surfaces...yet retaining a size that would not comprise ride height, gearing, nor general appearance.

Put R4's on this tractor and you loose all your clearance height and it really looks odd to boot.

Just so you know these tires are actually classified as an R4/Industrial and as for weight handling I will put them up against any. Weight rating is over 4000 lbs front and over 10,000 lbs rear per tire. Hefty to say the least.

As for clogging with mud...we will see...reports I have read seem to indicate they are pretty good. FYI these are a "new school" tires...computer designed tread pattern that is self cleaning, directional and radial. Much different than your father's R1's or R4's that are the same tread pattern as they have been for more than 3 decades most still being bias ply too. Regardless I don't plan on mudding or tilling with them.

Time will tell but for my varied usage (I don't till fields) I am fairly confident that they will be the answer. They also maybe the answer for many others on this site too that's why I am sharing. It took a lot of digging to find these. You don't see too many Nokian tractor tire dealers around the U.S. yet.

I will update and report this summer on how they are in mowing haying etc. I can tell you already that they kick butt on snow covered fields and snow/ice covered pavement plowing. They also ride awesome going down the road at 25mph .

Cheers

They look like they'd be good on snow or paved areas, like I said, a good looking campus or corp center grounds maintenance kind of tire.

But no way they can do what AG's do or R-4's in self cleaning. The tread spacing is too small to throw mud like a bar tire with 4"-8" spacing. Just common sense. Also, bars paddle through mud better than a turf or tight tread like yours. There's no way you'll see them on a farm tractor or backhoe.

Don't get me wrong they're a great lookin tire and they'll do some things better than R-1's or R-4's..

Nokians are hands down one of the best snow tires on the planet!! Glad to see they make them for ag tractors too.
