All,

I am taking delivery of a new 6500 2-wheel drive today. It will be used for general agriculture type work (moving hay, cultivation etc). I can't locate any specific break-in instructions in the owners manual ... does anyone have advice or know any specific instruction on breaking these tractors in,

Thanks in advance.

bludev, I note you're a farmer. Run the 6500 like any other diesel. Operators manual says to change the oil/filter at 50 hr service time, However, the Service Manual (I picked one up on Ebay) says first oil/filter change should be at 25hrs. I ran my 6000 at light to moderate load varying the speed for the first 10 or so hours. Manual says don't let it idle very long at any time during breakin. I picked mine up around May a few years ago so the grass was already growing. I used a 7ft brush hog in 3-4ft pasture grass to break mine in the most. Ran it in 2nd and 3rd gear at about 1500rpm. Note: once you have it broken in, you can run in the same stuff in 4th at about 1700rpm. During this time I noted that the temp gauge never got up to half way...After the first oil change at 23hrs, it ran a tad cooler still. Being a farmer, is suppose you're gonna get the rears filled....I did as I have an FEL. Helps a bunch. good luck! BobG in VA

Thanks for the advice Bob. Yea, I was thinking of the bush-hog, but the pastures are just now starting to come out, so bush-hogging is not an option right now. I do have to till one 3 acre pasture to sow some bermuda grass, and I was wondering if pulling a 3 bottom plow (in red-dirt/clay) with varying throttle speeds in a lower gear would be a break-in option,

Thanks again.

That'll work....some folks say break them in like you're gonna work them. As you know the "load" thing is to wear in the rings so you don't have excessive oil consumption. Put the plow on, run it in 2nd at moderate rpm and vary it some. I'm pretty sure that once you have 15 hours on it, you can go to 3rd or even 4th. Good luck! BobG in VA
