New Aquiline Talon tire chains!

Thanks for the input Redneck, since you have no problem with V bar chains on the front of your L3400, I' put them on mine, I have ice everywhere around here now after this ice storm and the tread is getting down on my AG front tires. Actually my rear tires are getting wore out to, after 500 hrs. this might be the last year on the original tires.

I've been running v-bar chains on the front of my L4330 for years...no problem, good steerability on ice; plain-jane chains on the rear ...Should have mentioned, turf tires that support the chains quite well in any position.

According to the video, "the slack should be limited (limited) to one fist" ...and the faster you drive, the tighter they should be.
It does not demand that you leave "one fist", as I read it ...although I can appreciate the "bridging" explanation offered by one of the posters, which would apply only to Ag tires, it seems.

L4330 sounds bigger then my L3400, I thought turf tires was only small tractors and with turf tires there's no place for the chain to hide. So I wonder why the Kubota dealer where I bought mine, says don't put chains on front.

That's what I want do is help with steering, what tractor do you have? Mind is a L3400 with 16" tires on front, and I have a old set of 16"V bar pickup truck chains I like to put on front but don't dare to until I here someone else do it.

New Holland TC40. 4WD. Front tires are 7x16.

When I first got my Talon tire chains in Nov. (07) I put them on snug and straight with no tensioners, and within a few weeks the chain were all over the place, to the point that they look like they was half on and half off, it irk me, and I don't like to be IRK. That's what crooked tire chains does to me, and when the chains break after spending $500.00+$$$, that cause me to get out the Ford wrench and........
Last year I tried putting 1/4" chains on from the rim to the side chains to keep them on straight, that's what we did 30 years ago on Skidders, run side chain to the rim, it work and even tighten them up, but according to this forum, chains aren't suppose to be tight. So this year I put on those fancy spring tensioners on my tractor, I know everybody is jealous because they don't have them on their tractor. But if the chains stay on straight and wont break when I haul a log out, I'll be a happy camper, testing 123..................

The spring tensioners work very well on my Aquiline Talons. Have for a couple of years now.

Now that makes since to me, no looser then 1 fist, and I could understand the cross chain bridging the gap between the AG tread when it rolls over a rock/stump holding up the whole weight of the tractor if one was to have a steel wheel with AG tread, there is no give on a steel wheel, but a tire made of rubber loaded with liquid and air has got some give to it so the chain should fold into it. I know in the other 3 seasons with just a bare tire when my tractor goes over a stump, the tire acts almost like sponge, it gives in a little, my tire gives in more because I don't inflate to the max air pressure.
Maybe I should try to find some old half tracks like Father use to have on his mid 1940s VAI Case, them were the days.

Finally someone on here using spring tensioners, and likes them, now I feel better. I just put them on a last Saturday not knowing if I wasted $50.00 or not.

The only problem I can see with chains being loose is if they aren't a good fit for the tire size. When I first got mine I put them on and trimmed the excess chain off. As you said, after a few weeks they were noticeably looser as they "worked their way into place", so I adjusted them a bit tighter. I don't cut any more chain off now, because I think part of it is the tire wearing a bit. I just adjust them to the next link on the side chains. Mine have never twisted or offered to come off.

Some like chains with a little slack in them. Some like them tight and tucked. I like them tight and tucked. Loose ends safety wired. These are Aquiline Talons with spring tensioners:
