Thanks for the extra info JWR,
Well after a closer look at that collar, it definitely isn't a twist type..... So I'm hoping it will just tap back with out a problem. By hand it was pretty firmly in place. Looks a little different than the one above.

I think it is probably the same release collar as mine. They are spring-loaded internally of course. Once you free up the collar (prying it out to left in the picture you show) it should go in/out easily with only the spring resistance to it coming outward. Once that is done, getting the u-joint to slide on the splined shaft will be the hard part (if there is a hard part.) Maybe we are being too apprehensive. Holding the collar out to release the u-joint may be difficult WHILE trying to put outward force on the u-joint. You may be able to pry on the u-joint with some tool while holding the collar to the left. If that fails you might get a helper to hold the collar outward while you insert a small crow bar or whatever fits through the u-joint and then tap that gently with a hammer to get the u-joint started coming off the splines.
