Kevin, here is that shot you asked for of the water/road from the house front deck. I think this shows pretty well why I want to move the house. The road is quiet but it's too close. Note, too, that the deck is in shade (and this was taken at 2.30pm) while the trees on the other side of the road are still in sunshine.

Here is a shot of the felling of the final Douglas Fir we need to make the barn. We should get close on 2000 board feet out of this beauty.

We did a ring count, Mike, and the tree is 81 years old. It's exactly the same age as another Douglas Fir we took out of a different part of the woodland. I believe the land was clearcut 81 years ago.

Fortunately, there's still a lot of mature trees in the woodland, mainly Douglas fir but some cedar, maple and grand fir. Although I'll take out the odd thinning for firewood, I'll be doing no more logging for quite some years.

Just picked up a nice, used sawmill to mill the logs we've felled. It's a Norwood Lumbermate 2000, Cuts 31" diameter logs up to 17 feet long. The mill cost only a little more than the quotes I was getting for buying in the milling services. The only problem is a couple of butts that are bigger than the mill can take but we'll trim these with the chainsaw so it can fit.

The mill came with toe board/log roller package and fifteen extra blades. Mulling over whether I should keep it or flip it once I've milled the wood for the barn. I might have become quite attached to it by the time the project is over.
