New battery

Back when Mom bought her one and only new car, Toyota, it was AC Delco... best car battery life I've come across... but it was the original Green Eye battery that seems to have gone away.

Pretty sure they don't make the "green eye battery" any more . Heard many say it was still green and the battery ended up being bad. Think the green eye only measured electrolyte level meaning yellow or dark green indicated a problem. Guess if it was a good idea they'd still be popular.

I thought the Battery Hydrometer disappearance was a cost thing as it was around for Decades.

The state of charge of a lead-acid battery can be estimated from the density of the sulfuric acid solution used as electrolyte.

But it might have been just a sales gimmick and only measured the one cell which could be perfect and all the others not.

Yea my father in law use to sell and install AC Delco batteries at his shop. Those eyes were always green. I had 3 or 4 deep cycle Delco batteries. They were stone cold dead and we're green eyes still.

The only true way to test a batteries charge or state of health is by taking a SG (specific gravity) reading when fully charged and 8 hours after taken off the charger. A volt meter at the same period is an adequate second observation method.

I seriously doubt your 8 month old battery is bad. Charge it to 13.1-2 volts and let sit for 24 hours. Check again and if still 12.7-8 or more look elsewhere for problem. If not sealed make sure it is filled with distilled water.

Replaced my Truck Battery with a Bosh a couple Yrs. back. 3rd. battery, 2nd. was a Interstate that only lasted 4yrs.. POS.!! After installing the Bosh I checked it two mornings in a row after running the Truck for a good while. It came up 18.50 both mornings. Stopped at the place I purchased it from and They checked and replaced it no questions asked. After replacing it 12.88. I figured they would my Tractor battery is 10yrs. old that I owned it come Jan. and it will sit a week and test 12.58.

I had a legit 1 month old Panasonic, OE Toyota battery bought at the Dealer and installed by the dealer I bought my Highlander from go bad after a month. It happens. I also worked at an auto parts store in college..seen it many times. Its not likely but it does happen. Its a very small percentage that go bad in the first year but happens, more than one would think.

Do Johnson Controls make Batteries in the US? I work for them here in Australia. They bought into Tyco.
I bet they make about half the batteries on the market. There the biggest supplier I beleive. The other 2 are Interstate/Excide and Deka. Maybe another I am missing, but between those 3 you will probably capture 95% of the batteries on the market, name brands and house brands...meaning like the Duralast and Autocraft batteries found at Autozone and Advance Auto Parts.
