Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

Get yourself some small plastic or wood wedges and experiment with bore cuts on softwood. Once you get the hang of it you could make short work of that hunk of lumber!

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

Andy that is a real nice machine you have there. Also, I've never seen such a serious looking winch.

Have fun and keep up the pictures.

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

SWEEEEET! Dang , that is the MACHINE! I love the winch setup. Do you know if they make a winch that is just a plain winch ( I hope that makes sense), one that just reaches in enough to just pick out smaller stuff 6in. to 1ft? I can rehook with a chain to haul. Man ,to see all these cool attachments makes my eyes bugg out all the time- it's starting to hurt!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

There are quite a few winch manufacturers out there. Advantage of a logging winch over a plain-ol-winch is that you snug the logs to the winch plate as opposed to your rear hyrdaulics, pto, butt or anything else in the rear of the tractor. (All of which generally gets bruised, banged up or worse). Been there, done that - never again. Another readon for the winch is pulling wood off of wet areas without violating the regs. (New Hampshire is pretty strict about that) or getting my tractor stuck.

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

Andy,
You got that right about New Hampshire regs!!

Kinda makes one wonder...if you do little logging on your land they or someone watching, but when it comes time to sand blast and paint the bridges over water nobody says anything, and I wonder if they know where the extra paint and sand from the sand blasting goes.

Than you have to deal w/the town or city for permits and maybe the state to reclaim the land...oops forgot to mention after all this work done and your land looking good up goes your taxes. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Maybe like the song that Johnny Cash sang..one piece at a time. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

17 degrees up here and sleeting w/10mph wind..should be interesting. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I guess you gave your new Kubota the day off do to this nasty storm.

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

OK Andy, now I want to see the log splitter. I figure it has to stand about 20' tall and have a wedge about 6' across. Maybe D8 powered, splits around 1 cord a minute, or so./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Nice set up.

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif That would be great! Not quite gargantuan but still pretty amazing was a video I saw of a boom mounted splitter made by the same folks who make my winch. Meant for the big boys (as in put this on the end of your excavator or 100+ hp tractor) this thing eats a whole log and spits out split wood direct to your truck. It starts out on it's side and you push it onto the end of the log (think of a couple of good-sized grapple piles for a feed source). Then you rotate the machine (and log) vertically and place it over your truck. Then press the button and you have instant split firewood as it moves the log down, cuts and splits continuously. You would have to move a LOT of wood to pay for that puppy!

Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!

I have to be even more carefull about the regs as I am a Conservation Commissioner in our town - so I have to set the example. You are dead-on about the brdiges and stuff. It is usually the towns and municipalities who are the biggest offenders. Big toys and small brains in some cases. More often they don't realize they are subjest to the same rules as the rest of us.

The regs. can be a pain but there sure are a lot of seminars and educational opportunities to learn how to do it right. I think the forestry certification programs are a good idea. Educating landowners is the biggest challenge - a good consulting forestor can generate many times his fee in increased revenue.

Where abouts are you? It only got down to the low 20's here and I was on the tractor yesterday to take out the slush before it gets cold again.
