finally got a canopy to help with the snow/sleet/rain etc. it's a firebird fiberglass that the dealer had in stock, $450. plus tax, I liked the Curtis but it would be $200. more with the shipping. the rops can fold with it on and lock in place if you needed to get under something, I don't need to fold it and will probably take it off for the summer (4 u-bolts)
Seems to be well made and very simple, so far I'm happy, just wonder if it could handle the wind when trailering, around town would probably not be a problem but I don't know about highway speeds.

Looks great! :) Sounds like a good price also.

It certainly looks good, but of course I find it a little amusing when you say you "will probably take it off for the summer". I guess that's the difference in your part of the country and mine. If I'd ever taken mine off (which I didn't) it would have been in the Winter. In the Summer is when we need the sun shade down here.:D I really never needed one in the Winter.:D

I also got a canopy for mine. $258.00 with shipping from www.mowerecanopies.com. Very easy install with 2 u-bolts. Personalized for free. The frame of it worked perfect for my forward and rear lights I added. I too was worried about towing with it on, but last weekend I hauled my tractor at 50-55mph with no problems. Hope it helps this winter with the snow.

When we get this question asked of our canopy line, we recommend backing the tractor onto the trailer so when you are traveling at highway speeds, the wind doesn't catch up under the canopy as easily. Also make "sure" the bolts are tight, they can loosen over time (tractor vibration) and this could allow the canopy to blow off.

In all the ads they refer to them as sun shades, none of the ads I read ever even mentioned rain or snow so I guess your in the majority, just hope it works for what I'm looking for, I know I wont be powder dry but it should help considerably. definitely makes it sound loader though.
Thanks everyone for the response, JB

Sorry for the typo. But as for the canopy you really can't beat it for the price. Deere wanted over $500.00 for the same thing basically. As for the protection from the elements, (sun, rain, snow, etc) not a bad item to add to the wish list. No snow here yet but I know it is coming. Living near Yellowstone Park, weather changes on a dime.

The price does sound good. However, the John Deere unit is not "the same thing basically." I also have the same canopy that JB4310 has and it's $400, with mounting hardware extra. That's a bit more than the $258 that you paid but it is a much larger and heavier duty unit. It also extends almost as wide as the rear tire track width and extends further forward for better weather protection. I'm quite impressed with mine and glad I went this route.

Follow up to my canopy thread, well we got about 10 " of snow today and I got a chance to see if the canopy would help with snow removal when it's still snowing out. My legs still got wet but it does keep the snow/rain off your upper body, just need to wear some rain pants. so I'm satisfied, now I'm thinking about some soft side cab set-up!!!

Ya, it could get nasty some times and dangerous, I slipped and fell flat on my back so hard yesterday it almost knocked me out, I couldn't believe it as I'm pretty sure footed working on steep church roofs and what not, but I never felt so out of control as I did yesterday when I saw my feet fly up in the air in such an unnatural way I new I was in trouble! I'm OK just sore, I think cause I landed so flat that helped spread the load, I heard all kinds of cracking, wont have to go to chiropractor for a while!!! Ive heard of people dying from slips and thought how could that be, not any more.

not bad looking at all, this is another purchase I think about.

You mentioned that you can fold it down to get under something if necassary, but I think you will find that when tilted, the front of the canopy tilts up and will be higher than the correct position.

I had to go back and check since I never fold the ROPS, but look at the last picture in the first post of this thread, kinda awkward sticking out the back but it is lower than when up.

Glad you were not seriously hurt. I had some similar experiences in the New England Snow when i lived there for a while.

How much does it increase the overall height?

Very little as the rops fits up into the hump on the top, if you bring it down close you gain maybe just 1 inch, that was important to me so I could get in my shed without folding.
