The breakdown is about the same gas or diesel. The diesel wins on power and capability. There is a difference with a 1/2 ton struggling with 10k and a diesel sailing by whistling a tune while pulling it.

I couldn't believe the difference when I got my 08 Chevy 2500HD last year.
It pulls loads that my old (dead) Full size Blazer used to struggle with. The Blazer got around 12 to 14 mpg empty but about 6 to 8 mpg towing. The Silverado gets 15 or 16 towing and 19 to 20 mpg empty. The power difference in towing is incredible. Around here in So Cal. diesel and regular are about the same price now. I know there's quite a difference in up front purchase cost, but it's worth it to me for all the towing I've been doing every other weekend over the last year alone. It's almost like driving up and back with no load at all.

I had an 01 Silverado with a 3.73 Offroad package and I used it to tow my TC 40 a few times with attachments. It towed the load, but it worked hard going up a four mile long incline. My new Dodge 5.9 CTD does it with ease. The Silverado was pulling 4,000 RPMs at times to maintain a reasonable speed. I am now paying $3.39 for diesel and gas is around $2.49 in my area. I am willing t pay the difference because I don't use my truck as daily transportation.

Similar results here, but with a 2007 GMC 3500 Duramax pulling a 2+1 C&C Horse Trailer w/dressing area...The truck towing gets better mileage than the wife's old GMC Jimmy did just driving!!!

Wow California with cheaper prices than new england area,, fuel here is still anywhere from 3.69 to a low of 3.40

Here it is yesterday's diesel price.
This station has the lowest diesel price but their regular is more expensive than other places. I go to another station to get regular for the Jeep. Funny thing is they're about 2 miles apart on the same road!

If I ever decide to downsize, (which I doubt I'd do, but if I did ) I would get rid of my IH4800 and get a GMC5500 4x4 with a DMAX. There's nothing out there that can touch it for the price.

I can have my backhoe hauled around for me for cheaper than it costs to own a heavy backhoe trailer and store it.

Gas here is under $2 now. Actually, I filled my little Saturn up for $1.88 this morning, only took 7.6 gallons. Yesterday I filled the F-150 up for $1.97. It was not empty and only took 16.4 gallons but I figured I might as well get it why its cheap. It could all change after this circus called election is over.

I would really like to get a new Chev w/ D-Max but just can't find the coin right now so I opted for 4:56 gears behind my 5.7 instead. Don't know if that will off set the way less power but it might get me part way there.

I have two new 2008 Chevy's (a 2500 and a 3500). I have had Ford's and Dodge's, but nothing compares to the new Chevy. They have tons of power and are comfortable and durable at the same time. I could not be happier with these trucks.

I have 27,000 miles in 1 year 8 months and not one single issue. Truck ain't no commuter truck, either.

We have now notified the dealer of our upcoming purchase. It will be a 2500 d-max, either extended or quad cab, and long bed. Preferably white, but there is a local black one that has been taken to shows w/ about 100 miles on it for an amazing deal with almost everything we want. Dad wants a quad cab, but I think an ex. cab is better. We have to fit through paths and such. Ah well, I'll let you all know when I know more of it.

You really need to convince the old man to spend the extra few bucks and get a 3500 SRW. Only a few hundred dollars more and you get a 1,100# more payload in a Dmax. My friend had a 2500 Dmax, 2007, for 2 weeks before he wanted airbags. He could have just just gotten the 3500 and been fine for the same $$$$ in the long run.

I am going to give you the most serious advice I have ever given. Forget the extended cab and go with the quad cab. I have lots of friends that have done that and the next time went to the quad cab. They have never went back

Chris I will say some nice things about ford just for you though.

1. They are a better looking truck in my opinion especially the interior. Chevrolet seems to be trying to copy that.

2. They came out with the trailer brake controller built in the dash first. An idea whose time was long overdue

3. I have never had one but the adjustable pedals is a nice feature according to my friends who have one.

We were originally looking at that. Somehow, just the few extra $$$ and the fact that we don't need it, is enough to turn us away. If we find a good deal on one, we'd get it. Our '03 2500 vortec, 4spd, really don't need replaced, with just hitting 78,000mi. We know for sure we don't want duals for the following reasons-
-No need for it
-Little less traction
-1-2 mpg lost
-No extra cost at first, but when replacing tires, 2 extra to replace.
-front rims are uglier (in our opinion)
-fitting through the path, especially with quad cab
-width in general
-more likely to be in accident with extra fender width like that

Just not needed.

Thanks for the advice on the quad cab. However, our ex. cab is only used for extra storage. And the only person that would ride back there is me, a little tight-I'm 175lbs-but it works. With a bigger cab, it's a bigger mess. We eat like truckers and trash goes back there or in the bed.

I agree with gemini5362. I've had several extended cab pickups from my current Ford Ranger and an F150, to two 3500 Chevy's; one SRW and one dually. They serve the purpose, but if you're buying new and have a choice . . . if you get the extended cab, there will be times you wish you'd gotten the crew cab, but if you get the crew cab, you'll never wish for the extended cab.

I have 2 extended cab Ford Superdutys and I hate them. You go to Lowes to buy something and you get back to the truck and you open both doors and you are trapped between the 2 doors, your truck, and the car next to you all while your cart is out in nowhere land. The Titan is the only truck I have seen where the extended cab door folds all the way, 180 deg, against the bed to address this problem

The only reason I have them is a Super Crew will not fit in my garage and I have kids so I need a place to haul them. I refuse to leave my vehicles in the drive. I guess I am spoiled but my parents always keep everything in the garage and so do I. 2 go in the garage at night and 2 go in the pole barn. I do have a 2007 F-150 4x4 Super Crew and with a short bed it will fit in the garage.
