( Well nice try. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Seriously though alcohol is much worse than soda at dehydrating the body. One of the causes of a hangover is dehydration, especially the headaches. )

My doctor advised me to drink wine with dinner every night. So I ordered 12 cases of Reisling from Ponderosa Vinyards in New Mexico at the Santa Fe International Wine Festival. Great stuff. national award medal winner. Anyone who likes white wines should give Mary a call, she will even give you a fee hat if you buy enough (which is more than I got when I bought my last tractor!!!)

Bob, I used to love white wines until I discovered red wines.

Doesn't the talk about the unhealthy side effects of what we consume bring up the George Burns comment that went something like this...

Interviewer: Mr Burns, you say you smoke a couple of cigars and consume a healthy dose of whiskey each day, what does your doctor have to say about this?

George Burns: My doctors dead.

To a steelworker, the title New Coke?? has a whole different meaning! I was thinking that they came up with a new way to make the fuel for our blast furnaces. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Anyhow, I prefer Busch & not the lite stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes soda can have an affect on ARD. Caffeine is a stimulant and can lead abnormal muscle function, spasticity, and irritation to the stomach and digestive system. Usually with ARD anything with caffeine is one of the first things eliminated.

Bob red wine has alot more health benefits than white wine especially for men. Again it's all about moderation. A shot of whiskey, one or two beers, a glass or two of wine are all fine. It's the excess that is bad for you. As a rule of thumb you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. The more caffeine you drink the more that # should go up.

Rat,

How many people do you know that lived to 100? Not very many that had an unhealthy lifestyle, especially smoking.

"How many people do you know that lived to 100? Not very many that had an unhealthy lifestyle, especially smoking."

Very very few people live to be 100, healthy lifestyle or not. What are the statistics Doc ? Well under 1% I expect ?

Don't think I want to give up all of my enjoyment for a couple of extra years on the end when I can't enjoy it anyway and am just in a rest home drooling on myself and paying the remainder of my life savings to the medical industry.
Nope I'll use reasonable care, but eat lotsa junk food and help out Social Security by dying younger, It's just the patriotic thing to do.

For years, I would drink 7 or more cups of coffee a day at work -- then on the weekends get terrible headaches, because my coffee intake was only 2 cups each morning. My body was getting deprived of caffine. About a year ago, I cut back to just 1 large cup in the morning, and started drinking more water. From getting 2-3 headaches per week, I am now down to about 1 headache per month!

Concerning red wine: I LOVE red wine, but the tannin in it also give me headaches -- so I try and buy wines bottled in France. I heard most wineries in France put egg whites in the wine, and as they fall to the bottom of the barrel they absorb much of the tannin. I have had reasonable luck with the French wines. If it's not from France, I try and limit my intake to just 1 glass. It's a 50/50 chance I'll end up with a headache the next morning -- so I generally take some asprin before going to bed on a wine drinking evening.

...out of a real wooden case, with the wooden dividers, that you had to return to the distributor in order to be able to buy another case of Coke.

Richard,
A lot of us have been drinking the equivalent of C2 for years. What I mean by that is mixing half-and-half Coke Classic with ordinary or decaf Diet Coke. I do this at the fast food spots that let you get your own fountain drink. I have tried (and like) the formal C2, and its taste is very comparable to the "home brew." For me, the real sugar in the Coke Classic cuts the "chemical" aftertase of the no-cal sweeteners in the diet version. Some folks are more sensitive to that aftertaste than others. At the fountain, I actually like 1/3 Coke Classic and 2/3 Diet Coke best.
Try the half-and-half mix next time you are at the Golden Arches, and that way you won't have to waste $ on buying C2 at the market if you find you don't care for it.

Tracdoc,
I cannot handle Putrasweet stuff. It leaves a horrible aftertaste in my mouth for hours and knots up my stomach. I would sooner siphon gas with a hose, the taste goes away sooner /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This incompatibality with Nutrasweet was known when it first rolled out, also It was not origionally intended for softdrinks as it was known to damage the liver and there was concern about children drinking it. However once the door was open it got approval for soft drinks as well.

I'm allergic to the tannins in red wine, same effect, bad headaches. Even when I only take a small amount of a red, like a half a glass. So I limit myself to the whites and eliminate the side affects.

As for the caffeine, I am a coffee junkie at work, but I learned long ago about the problems of caffeine withdrawl so I drink it on the weekends too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif As I now approach my mid 40's I'm adding a lot more water to my diet as well. My main complain is it tastes like water!

I noticed the same thing about beer.

Gasoline is cheaper than both.

On a tangent, did you know that at the fast food joints, it's drinks and fries that give them their profits? A large soft drink (including cup) costs the restaurant about 8 cents -- and they charge over $1 for it. Fries have a similar cost.

slowrev,
Sounds like you're off the scale on the chemical aftertaste and upsets that nutrasweet produces. Fortunately, my distaste for it is mild. Saccharin bothers me more. The new one, sucralose (Splenda) bothers my wife and a lot of other people I know, but not me. It's interesting. In Europe and in many other countries the chief sweetener is still cyclamate (Sucaryl) which was dropped by Abbott Labs in the USA because of concerns that it caused bladder cancer in mice. Turns out that the study design was flawed, and it's harmless (in that regard at least). Patent expired, and other companies started making it worldwide. A can of diet Coke in the EU has a blend of these chemicals, and its taste is 'distinctive', to say the least. I won't drink it there. On the other hand, the taste of Classic Coke in the EU, and I imagine the world over is just like in the USA. Can't beat good ol' sugar--in moderation, at least.

I was thinking of the pre 1911 coke.

Water and lemon juice just can't be beat when your working hard and thirsty.

Caffeine = the devil's work = poison
/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
At least that's what I've come to realize after kicking the coffee/coke habit after years of caffeine addiction. I HAD to have a morning caffienated drink or I was worthless. Used to drink a minimum of 3 caffeinated drinks per day. I've got it down to a science now. I can drink a coke every three days and be fine. If I drink on consecutive days, there is good odds that I'll get tired and/or a headache on the afternoon of the second coke-free day. If I drink coke for three days, I will get sick, tired, and a headache on the afternoon of the second day.

Of course, to avoid all of this hassle and counting days, etc., it's easier just to drink water or juice or my personal favorite, decaffienated quick brew Lipton.

I think a lot of people who suffer from headaches and tiredness don't make the connection between them and caffeine intake/dehydration. It's amazing how much a gatorade will improve how you feel.

You may well be on to somehing. I can remember when I was framing homes for my Dad and at lunch he would bring us a bottle of Pepsi, Dr Pepper etc., about 1/2 hour later I was worthless and all I could think of was a pillow and getting horizontal. On the other hand, water seems to do this the least. After football practice here in the heat of Sacramento summers, we would drink many gallons of fluid. I was just on the cusp of not being allowed water during practice. My senior year we got a sip of salty so called Gatorade half way through practice.

Gatorboy,

Try a vitamin b complex when you go to bed. This will help eliminate many of the head aches. It has to do with the metabolism of the alcohol.

Give it a try works for me.
