Sorry, I missed the rotary cutter part also. A 5' cutter would probably be ideal for your use. For one thing, maneuverability is better than with a 6', and on slopes, the 6' is mighty heavy. You should be able to easily cut 1" and even better, but slowly SLOWLY backing into anything larger a little at a time. Let the blades start cutting into it, and ease back a little more. I've cut 3" stuff with my 1" cutter doing it this way with no problem. Just be SURE you don't back in too quickly and shock the whole system. I use an inexpensive Howse cutter that's holding up pretty well. I understand the First Choice cutters are good, very much like the Woods, at lower prices. Whatever you buy, just look at the welds and see if they seem adequate. Woods mowers have a little better lubrication system than some others which may add to it's life. John

It's wonderful when your wife enjoys tractoring as much as you do and it really helps some projects go a lot faster. The only drawback that I've found is that when you return, all dirty and sweaty, after working hard for about 6 hours and she gives you that look that says, "I could have done that in about 5-1/2 hours. Okay, that being said, what is "ballpark" for 5' & 6' rotary cutters?

Cutters have a very wide range of prices, depending on brand or quality or heavy dutyness, from $500 to several thousand.
I have a 6' King Kutter with slip clutch, purchased from Tractor Supply. I paid around $800, it does all I need with no problem. I have most of my brush clearing done and now use it for mostly field mowing.

I paid about $950 for a 72" medium duty cutter. While I am waiting to get either a CK30 or DK35 I am using it on a friends old JD 950. All I have to cut are fields with very little thick brush. If I had heavy brush I would have only gone for a 60". The 72 worked great. Some of the grass was as higher than 6'. The tractor had more trouble with all the fuzzy stuff clogging up the grill and overheating, than it did cutting.
