RobertN- That is not bad, in CT it is 2.37 and MA it is down to $2.29. Super duper at Mobil today is $2.03 and cheap gas is $1.83....

**I would tell the original poster again, look at why you want one and see what the pros and cons are (along with upkeep, fuel etc). Also never EVER pay window or retail price...Those #'s are just somewhere to start. When I got my truck retail was over $35K and I got it "out the door" for under $28K..go figure.

this may be true in your neck of the woods, certainly not here,. I would say just three years ago, it would be true, but not now. This morning, regular gas 189.9 per gallon, diesel, 219.9.. and this is the way it has been since 01 in New England.. There is no reason that I can see for this major difference. I get so mad, I want to punch people out when they say about time you diesel people pay your way... I paid 18 yrs owning and operating tractor trailer units and the avg Joe, hasn't a clue what we pay in mileage taxes etc...

Diesel was less expensive when I got mine('01 Cummins Dodge). Now... However, I do not believe a 3//4 ton 4x4 heavy duty with a gas engine would get better mileage or longevity. A 1/2 ton maybe.

I do not know what the national average is, but diesel is taxed more here too. It's close to 50 cents tax on disel per gallon. Gas is closer to 40 cents/gal.

On my way to school this evening, I did see regular for $2.07...

For Thanksgiving we made a trip of about 700 miles. With a 2003 F250, 6.0 Diesel, 4x4, crew cab, and automatic trans we got 18.3 mpg for the trip. Price for a gallon of Diesel in California on this trip was $2.21 (Sacramento/Stockton area) and $2.18 (Bakersfield).

Last spring I made a longer trip to Los Angeles about 1,000 miles round trip. Same truck towing an enclosed car trailer (modest weight but big frontal area/wind load) for 14.5 mpg.

I used to have a 1998 F250, 5.4, 2wd, manual trans and it got around 16 mpg on the highway (no trailer).

ok here is the deal.
I want the more room of the crew cab for the kids vers my dodge 2001 quad cab
I want 4x4 because .well I want it OK?
I pull my BX ( any truck could pull it)
I have a 18" boat ( any truck could pull it)
I also have a 28" camper ....I only pull it a few times a year 200 miles +-
I like the PSD but load 5k more and I then get to pay more for fuel and only get about 3 mpg better. Yea i know resale is more but like someone else said only because the upfront cost is more

If the upfront delta is around 4-6K (actually it's $4335 invoice) and the resale is around the same, maybe 1-2K difference, the costs seem to be about the same. During that time you're driving a truck with a more capable engine.

I can't say for CT & MA. You may very well have significantly higher taxes there. But in every other state I've been in 90% of the time diesel is lower than or about the same cost as regular gasoline.

As far as upkeep goes this is a minor, minor point. The only OTHER fluids that are required in a diesel is about 8 more quarts of oil with oil changes. That adds about $175 to the cost of fluids over 100k miles. Take out the tune-ups on a gas pickup and you're more than even there. As far as fuel filters go I change the filters in all of my vehicles at 15k. With the crappy fuel and all the crud in fuel these days that's just cheap insurance. Other than that there is no extra maintenance with a diesel. Over the life of one there's actually significantly less maintenance. Having owned diesels all my life and coming from a family that has kept the most meticulous of records there is no extra cost to owning a diesel period except for the initial cost of the motor.

The mileage difference in a like truck will be significantly more than 3 mpg.

As far as getting one if you have to talk yourself into it don't. A diesel is nice to drive, pulls it's guts out, and has almost unlimited potential for more hp. For your needs it definitely doesn't sound like you need one though. If you want one get it. If you're happy with a gas truck then go that route.

Right now the prices for diesel are 40 cents higher/gal than unleaded. Diesel took a jump quickly 6 weeks ago and has never dropped since. As for the unleaded, it was about $2.09, now is at $1.84. Diesel is running $2.24
